Huskies Head North to Face South Dakota Thursday

Coyotes feature #1 scoring defense in the Great West

VERMILLION, SD – The HBU women's basketball team will hit the road for the final two-game road trip on the season, as the Huskies face South Dakota on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 6 pm.

HBU is 2-3 all-time against USD. The Huskies and Coyotes faced each other three times during the 2008-09 season. HBU won the first-ever meeting, 65-55, in Sharp Gym behind 16 points, 10 rebounds by Jelela Simpson. The two teams faced each other in the season-ending Spring Thaw Tournament in Grand Forks, N.D., where USD defeated HBU 62-46 and 63-50. Jamie Spriggs scored her then-career high 20 points in the 62-46 game and Fallon Thomas led the Huskies with 15 points in the final meeting.

The two teams went 1-1 in the 2009-10 campaign, each winning on their home court. HBU won its only conference game in thrilling fashion, defeating USD 74-73 in overtime. Spriggs came off the bench to record a double-double of 14 points, 10 rebounds. The Coyotes defeated the Huskies in Vermillion, 76-45 behind three double-doubles by the Coyotes. Megan Green led the Huskies with 12 points. HBU is 2-0 against USD at home, 0-1 at USD and 0-2 at a neutral site.

HBU (2-16, 0-3 GWC) opened the home portion of the conference schedule with a 76-61 loss to UT-Pan American on Jan. 22. The close contest featured 10 ties and 12 lead changes before UTPA used a 12-2 run late in the second half to pull away.

Destinti Texada recorded her fifth double-double – and ninth in her career – with game highs 22 points and 14 rebounds. The 14 first-half points were a first-half high for her and the most she has scored in any half since scoring 16 in the second half at Lamar on Dec. 19, a game in which she set a new personal best with 25 points.

Senior guard Tia Jackson was second on the team with 13 points against the Lady Broncs, while Spriggs had nine points and seven rebounds. Donna Jackson and Re-Shawndra Jackson each recorded double-doubles for UTPA, as D. Jackson had 18 points, 10 rebounds and R. Jackson had 12 points, 10 rebounds.

HBU is shooting 38 percent from the floor and feature the seventh-ranked scoring offense in the league (52.8 ppg) and the sixth-best scoring defense (77.6 ppg).

The Huskies are second in the league in defensive rebounding, averaging 25.9 boards a game. The Huskies also feature the seventh-ranked scorer in the conference in Texada, who leads the team averaging 12.8 ppg. She is also third in the conference in rebounding, averaging 8.3 rpg. Jackson is fourth in the league in assists, averaging 3.8 helpers a game.

South Dakota (10-9, 1-1 GWC) won its first conference game last Saturday, defeating Utah Valley 72-44 in the DakotaDome.

Amber Hegge led the Coyotes with 21 points and 12 rebounds for her second double-double on the season. She shot 10-of-16 from the field and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. She also recorded four assists and three steals. Katelyn Edwards scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Jodie Boss added 10 points. Sammie Jensen led the Wolverines with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Coyotes, who rank first in the conference in scoring defense, held Utah Valley to 18 second-half points. USD is giving up an average of 58.5 ppg and is third in the conference in scoring offense, averaging 62.6 ppg. The Coyotes are second in field-goal percentage, shooting 40 percent from the floor, and is first in the league in field-goal percentage defense, allowing 35 percent shooting a game. South Dakota is first in the league in blocked shots, averaging 5.8 per contest.

Hegge is ranked third in the Great West with a team-leading 16.6 points per game and is fifth in rebounding, averaging 7.1 rpg. Boss leads the conference with 3.3 blocks a game and is third in free-throw percentage, making 83 percent of her shots.

South Dakota's schedule features a Big 12 team who received votes in the poll (Kansas, 11/14) and the 16th-ranked Green Bay Phoenix, who defeated USD 70-53 on Dec. 28. HBU's schedule features 10 schools who made it to post-season play last season, 2009 national champion runner-up, Louisville, and the 25th-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders, who defeated the Huskies 73-36 on Jan. 3.
