CHICAGO – Chicago State shot 52.7 percent from the field to down Houston Baptist, 91-82, in the Great West Conference basketball opener Thursday night at the Dickens Center.
Senior guard Andrew Gonzalez led the Huskies (1-14, 0-1 GWC) with 25 points to go along with four rebounds and a career-high nine assists. Freshman guard Jonathan Evans hit 4-of-6 from behind the arc and finished with a career-high 17 points, while junior forward Sammy Obetoh added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench. Junior forward Terry Bembry led HBU with seven rebounds.
Carl Montgomery hit 10-of-13 from the field and tied Gonzalez for the game high with 25 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Antonio Lofton hit 12-of-18 from the free-throw line and finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Jonathan Montgomery added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
After Chicago State extended its lead to 18 at 62-44 in the second half, the Huskies outscored the Cougars, 11-4 to cut the lead to 11. Chicago State answered right back and led 77-58 with 7:43 to go, and the Cougars led by as many as 21 in the half. A flurry of late threes got the Huskies back to within single digits.
The lead changed hands six times in the early going, and Chicago State led 21-20 with 11:29 remaining, then scored the next six points. The Cougars later went on a 7-0 run, including five points by Lofton, to take their largest lead of the half at 42-29. Gonzalez finished with 10 for the half to lead the Huskies, while Lofton had 15 and Montgomery added 11 for the Cougars as they took a 44-33 lead into the locker room. Chicago State shot 53.8 percent, while holding HBU to 35.5 percent, including only 25.0 percent from behind the arc, in the half.
The Huskies shot 48.5 percent in the second half, including 7-of-13 from 3-point range. HBU hit 18-of-28 from the free-throw line for the game, while Chicago State made 29-of-44. There were 55 fouls called in the game, and senior forward Fred Hinnenkamp, senior guard Shawn Echols and Bembry each fouled out for HBU.
The Huskies continue conference play with another road game against NJIT Saturday at 3 p.m. in Newark, N.J.
