SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara had four players in double figures and hit 10 3-pointers to down Houston Baptist, 90-67, in non-conference basketball Friday night at the Leavey Center.
Senior guard Andrew Gonzalez had 22 points and eight rebounds, while junior forward Sammy Obetoh had a career-high 20 points, tied his career high with nine rebounds and handed out four assists for the Huskies (1-9). Senior guard Shawn Echols scored nine points before his hometown crowd.
Raymond Cowels III and Evan Roquemore led Santa Clara (6-5) with 17 points each, while Marc Trasolini had 16 and Kevin Foster had 12. Trasolini, Troy Payne and Ben Dowdell had seven rebounds each to lead the Broncos.
Santa Clara shot 46.3 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from behind the arc for the game, while holding HBU to 38.1 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from long range. The Broncos also went 18-for-22 from the free-throw line, and the Huskies went 13-for-21. Santa Clara outrebounded HBU, 48-35.
Gonzalez scored the Huskies' first seven points as they took a 13-10 lead, but the Broncos went on a 10-0 run to lead 20-13 with 9:36 left in the first half. Santa Clara led by as many as 10 at 35-25 and 43-33 and took an eight-point lead into halftime. Gonzalez led HBU with 16 points, while Obetoh added 14. Cowels led Santa Clara with 10.
The Broncos outscored the Huskies 16-6 to open up the second half and take a 59-41 lead and later went on an 11-2 run to go up 80-54, matching their largest lead of the game.
The Huskies continue their road trip when they face UMKC Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo.
