HOUSTON – Houston Baptist senior guard Andrew Gonzalez scored 30 points, but McMurry used a huge advantage on the offensive glass to claim a 64-60 victory over the Huskies in exhibition basketball Saturday night at Sharp Gym.
Gonzalez shot 11-of-17 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Senior guard Shawn Echols scored nine points and grabbed three rebounds for the Huskies, while junior forward Terry Bembry had eight points and five boards.
Teddy Chambers had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Steve Johunkin also had 15 points and grabbed eight boards. Bryant Taylor scored 12 points, and Steven Jones added 11.
HBU shot 46.8 percent from the field, while holding McMurry to 39.3 percent, but McMurry outrebounded the Huskies on the offensive glass, 17-6, and 40-26 overall. HBU also had 26 turnovers, while McMurry committed 25.
HBU trailed by seven with 15:37 to go in the second half, but McMurry went on a 10-0 run over the next 5:36 to take an 18-point lead, 49-31. The Huskies chipped away and got to within six at 50-44 with just over six minutes to go.
McMurry led by seven with less than 15 seconds left, but HBU senior guard Shawn Echols hit a 3-pointer as he was fouled and completed the four-point play to make it a one-possession game. Johunkin then hit one of two free throws to seal the win.
McMurry took a 5-4 lead with 16:10 left in the first half and led by as many four over the next five minutes. However, the Huskies tied the game, 15-15, at the 8:23 mark and led by as many as four over the next two minutes. HBU held a one-point lead, 21-20, but McMurry went on a 14-1 over the final 5:35 of the first half to go into the break with a 34-22 lead. McMurry outrebounded HBU, 19-12, in the opening half, including eight on the offensive glass. The Huskies also committed 16 turnovers and shot only 3-of-9 from the foul line with Gonzalez and Lamar Thomas sitting much of the half in foul trouble.
The Huskies open the regular season with a pair of road games, first at Oklahoma State Nov. 13 in Stillwater, Okla., followed by a trip to Northwestern State Nov. 15 in Natchitoches, La.
