UMKC Holds Off Huskies, 59-50

HOUSTON – Senior Tia Jackson scored a career-high 12 points and senior Ernesta Griciunaite tied a career high with 12 rebounds but it wasn't enough as HBU lost to UMKC, 59-50, Friday evening at Sharp Gym on the opening day of the Husky Classic.

UMKC entered intermission up by two, 27-25. The 'Roos shot 48 percent from the floor compared to 39 percent for the Huskies. Destini Texada led all scorers in the first half with nine points, but was shut down in the second half as she did not score a point and fouled out near the end of the game. LeAndrea Thomas and Sam Sikkink each scored a half-high six points for UMKC.

The Huskies had a difficult time getting shots to go at the beginning of the second half as UMKC went on a 6-0 run in the first three-and-a-half minutes to lead 31-25. HBU cut it to two, 31-29, but the 'Roos scored nine of the game's next 11 points to lead 40-31 and never looked back.

Jackson not only set a career-high with 12 points, but also set a new career mark with seven assists and four steals. Griciunaite tied a career high with 12 rebounds as she grabbed seven in the first half. Texada and Jamie Spriggs each scored nine points.

UMKC was led in scoring by Dayon Hall-Jones with 15 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Thomas and Jade Tinner each scored seven. Simone Bridges grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

HBU (0-6) will conclude the Husky Classic with a 5 pm tip-off against Portland on Saturday. The Pilots lots to Lamar, 76-66.
