HOUSTON – Houston Baptist senior guard Andrew Gonzalez went 14-for-14 from the free-throw line en route to a game-high 27 points and also grabbed five rebounds and five steals, but the Huskies came up short in their home opener, a 74-65 loss to UT-Arlington, Saturday night at Sharp Gym.
Junior forward Terry Bembry added 15 points and led the Huskies (0-3) with nine rebounds. Senior guard Michael Moss had four assists and five steals.
Bo Ingram and LaMarcus Reed each had 19 points for UT-Arlington, and Ingram notched a double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds. Cameron Catlett added 11 points and seven boards off the bench.
The Mavericks shot 49.0 percent from the floor, while holding the Huskies to 30.0 percent. HBU only made 3-of-18 from behind the arc, while UT-Arlington made 6-of-18. HBU shot 83.9 percent from the free-throw line, hitting 26-for-31.
HBU extended its one-point halftime lead to six by scoring the first five points of the second half, but UT-Arlington responded with a 12-1 run to go up, 46-41. The Huskies bounced back and scored the next six to regain the lead, but the Mavericks quickly took it back on on Darius Richardson's 3-pointer with 12:47 left. The Huskies trailed 54-53 with 8:55 to go, but the Mavericks went on an 11-2 run to go up by 10 and put HBU away.
Gonzalez scored 19 first-half points and hit 12-of-12 from the line as the Huskies led 33-32 at the break. HBU took its largest lead of the game after a 7-0 run gave the Huskies a 27-20 lead with 3:40 left in the opening frame.
The Huskies return to action when they travel to the Carrs Safeway Great Alaska Shootout Nov. 25-27 at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska. HBU opens the tournament against Arizona State Thanksgiving night at 8 p.m. CDT.
