Huskies Fall to Spartans, 60-50

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The HBU women's basketball team lost 60-50 against Norfolk State at Johnson Arena on the opening day of the Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational, hosted by Morehead State University.

The Huskies led 5-2 entering the first timeout, as Norfolk State's Batavia Owens scored the game's first points, then the Huskies went on a 5-0 run. Brittany Barton took a charge as the timeout arrived.

HBU led 5-4 entering the second timeout but found themselves down 14-11 entering the third media timeout of the opening half. Destini Texada led the Huskies with three points while Ernesta Griciunaite had five rebounds.

Entering halftime, Norfolk State led HBU 25-24. Griciunaite was tied with Barton for the team lead of six points while Gricuinaite was a half-high of seven rebounds. Whitney Long of NSU had a half-high 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

The Huskies came out shooting in the second half and led the Spartans 33-30 entering the first media timeout of the half.

The Husky offense stalled entering the second media timeout of the second half, as Norfolk State led 42-39. The Spartans hit a couple three-pointers immediately after the third media timeout, prompting Mary Gleason to call a timeout as the Huskies were down 13, 55-42.

Texada led the Huskies in points with 13 followed by Barton with 11. Griciunaite set a career-high with 12 rebounds. For Norfolk State, Whitney Long scored a game high 23 points including five three-pointers. Owens scored 11 and Rae Corbo added 10.
