LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Five different Cardinals scored in double-figures as the University of Louisville defeated HBU, 100-34, Wednesday evening at the Yum! Center.
The Huskies got on the board first with a jumper by Mele Leasau, but Louisville went on a 16-0 run to lead 16-2 entering the first media timeout of the game. The timeout came after the Cardinals hit a pair of three-pointers by Shoni Schimmel and Tia Gibbs. The Cardinals' leading scorer entering the game, Monique Reid, had half of UL's points (8).
A Leasau layup in the 12-minute mark ended a 26-0 run by the Cardinals. Brittany Maxey had a layup after a Cardinal turnover and the Huskies found themselves down 26-6 halfway through the first half.
A Schimmel three-pointer closed out the first half, with Louisville leading 57-26. Reid led all scorers with 16 points while playing in just 11 minutes, followed by Schimmel with 11. Schimmel was 3-of-4 behind the arc. Leading HBU was Leasau with six points, followed by both Maxey and Ernesta Griciunaite. Destini Texada was tied for the half high with five rebounds.
The Cardinals shot at or just under 50 percent in all three shooting categories: field goal percentage (53%), three-point percentage (50%) and free throw percentage (43%). The Huskies shot 43% from the floor.
Louisville started the second half on an 11-0 run and the two teams entered the first media timeout of the second half with the Cardinals up 68-26 on the Huskies.
A layup by Maxey in the 12-minute mark ended a second half-opening 17-0 run and the two teams entered the midway point of the second half with Louisville leading HBU 76-28.
Polly Harrington made the crowd cheer its loudest of the evening as her three pointer gave the Cardinals 100 points with under a minute to play in the game.
Ernesta Griciunaite came off the bench to score a team-high eight points and also had two of the team's three blocks. Texada led the Huskies with five rebounds.
Reid and Veronica Vails both led UL with 18 points, followed by Keshia Hines (12), Schimmel (11) and Gibbs (10). Asia Taylor led all players with 10 rebounds.
HBU (0-2) will continue its road trip against Norfolk State Friday afternoon at Morehead State University as part of the Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational.
