HBU Hits Road Block at Northwestern State, 87-78

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Houston Baptist junior forward Terry Bembry had his first double-double as a Husky with 15 points and 13 rebounds, but Northwestern State blocked 14 shots and scored 32 points off 30 Husky turnovers to come away with an 87-78 non-conference win Monday night at Prather Coliseum.


Senior guard Michael Moss and senior forward Fred Hinnenkamp each had 11 points and four rebounds, and Moss added four assists for HBU (0-2). Freshman guard T.J. Berry and junior forward Sammy Obetoh had nine points and four rebounds apiece, and senior guard Shawn Echols led the team with six assists. The Huskies were without leading scorer, senior guard Andrew Gonzalez, who was not medically cleared to play.


Devon Baker hit 7-of-16 from the field and 4-for-9 from 3-point range to led Northwestern State (1-1) with 19 points to go with five rebounds. Will Pratt and Louis Ellis had 17 points each for the Demons, while William Mosley had a team-high nine rebounds to go with four blocked shots. O.J. Evans had a game-high five blocks for the Demons.


Northwestern State shot 43 percent from the field, while HBU shot 40 percent. The Huskies were 7-for-19 and the Demons were 9-for-26 from behind the arc. HBU outrebounded Northwestern State, 57-41, including 21-18 on the offensive glass, but the Demons only turned the ball over 17 times.


The Huskies got off to a hot start in the first half, hitting seven of their first 10 shots, but only led 24-23 with 12:04 left. Northwestern State used hot shooting of its own to take a 35-28 lead, but HBU scored the next five to cut the lead to two. Northwestern State then took advantage of six of the Huskies' 16 first-half turnovers to go on a 12-0 run and go up, 51-35, with 2:27 left. Bembry had nine points and six boards in the first half for HBU, while Devon Baker and Will Pratt had 11 and Louis Ellis added 10 for the Demons, who took a 51-38 in the break.


HBU came out strong at the beginning of the second half as well, cutting Northwestern State's lead to 56-50, but the Demons responded with a 9-0 run to go back up by 15. The Huskies got to within nine a few times before the halfway mark and cut the lead the Demons' lead to 81-73 with 2:10 remaining.


The Huskies return to action when they host UT-Arlington in their home opener Saturday at 7:35 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
