HOUSTON, Texas - A trio of seniors were named to the 2008-09 Division I All-Independent Women's Basketball Team on Wednesday, including Fallon Thomas who was selected as the Independent Defensive Player of the Year.
Thomas earned the Defensive Player of the Year honors and Honorable Mention All-Independent accolades for a season in which she was among the nation's leader in steals, regardless of NCAA classification, with 121. Her 121 steals puts her second on the single-season steals list. The senior also led the team with 31 blocked shots and 90 assists. Thomas finished the year scoring 8.3 points per game while pulling down an average of 4.2 rebounds.
Jelela Simpson was also selected as an Honorable Mention All-Independent performer after averaging 10.2 points per game to lead the team. The 6-0 senior also led the team on the boards, pulling down 6.1 rebounds per game. Simpson was second on the team with 58 steals and she also dished out 53 assists. She was the team's top rebounder on 11 occasions and shot 40.9 percent from the floor.
Megan Morris was the third Husky to be named All-Independent Honorable Mention. Morris, a 6-2 senior, finished the year scoring 10 points per game and pulling down 5.8 boards per contest. She shot 41.1 percent from the field for the year and connected on 78.1 percent from the foul line. The senior finished the year with five double-doubles. Morris also had 54 steals, 43 assists and 14 blocked shots.
The All-Independent team and awards were voted on by coaches and sports information directors at all of the independent Division I institutions.
