MALPASS NO-NO LEADS HBU PAST TSU IN OPENER

Houston --- Kristi Malpass tossed a five-inning no-hitter as Houston Baptist University marched past Texas Southern University 9-0 in the opener of a doubleheader at Husky Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies have now won five in a row.

HBU got all the offense it would need in the first, as back-to-back three-baggers from Anna Barren and Kali Johnson provided two runs.

A five-spot went up in the second. Lorin Leatherwood scored on a failed pickoff attempt at third to make the score 3-0. Barren and Johnson then came through again with consecutive RBI singles before a two-run knock from Angelica DeVries.

Johnson got her second triple in the fourth to drive in a run, and Melissa Wright capped the scoring with an RBI single up the middle.

Malpass allowed just one walk and fanned seven in improving to 17-6 on the season. It is a new career-best in victories for the sophomore, who moves into a tie for ninth all-time with 33 wins.

Barren and Johnson each went 3-4. Barren scored three times and drove in two while Johnson scored twice and drove in three. Johnson tied a single-game record with the two triples, becoming the first player since 2002 to accomplish the feat.

Laine Skelton went 3-3 and DeVries was 1-3 with two RBI.

HBU improves to 25-12 overall heading into game two.
