SB: Offensive explosion propels Huskies to big win and three-game sweep of ETAMU

HCU remains one game back of final SLC postseason berth with one series remaining in regular season

COMMERCE, Texas --- Highlighted by Maddy Bailey's second homer in two days and a first career three-hit game from Breana Herrera, Houston Christian University exploded for its best game offensively of the season, walloping East Texas A&M University 15-4 on Saturday at John Cain Family Softball Complex. The Huskies grabbed an early lead then put a touchdown on the board in the fourth inning to break the game open.

It is the first conference series sweep of the campaign for the Huskies, who have now won four of five while fighting for the final SLC postseason berth.

The Huskies wasted no time in the series finale, pushing across a three-spot in the very first frame. Raenna Liscano walked and Jocelyn Briseno was hit by a pitch to begin the game and with one out, Maddy Bailey parked the third pitch she saw over the centerfield wall for a 3-0 lead. Her second homer in as many days was her third of the season.

Addy Prasifka worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first with no damage when the heavy rains hit the blue turf. After a 38-minute rain delay, HCU tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly by Jocelyn Briseno that plated Breana Herrera.

ETAMU got all those runs back in the bottom of the second. A KK Cosek double scored Gracie Alejo to get the hosts on the board, and two batters later Tatum Wright cranked her 15th homer of the season, a three-run blast that knotted things up at four.

That would be all for the Lions on this day, as the Huskies then scored 11 unanswered over the next three innings to take over. Madison Dominguez had a run-scoring fielder's choice and Briseno added an RBI single as HCU reclaimed the lead, 6-4.

The Huskies then marched down the field to put seven in the books on their fourth inning drive. Karlie Barba got things started with an RBI single to left and was followed by another RBI single to right by Chloe Foster, doubling the HCU lead 8-4.

Breana Herrera then doubled to right center to score both runners as the Huskies hit double-digits for the first time on the season.

Dominguez would score when Tayden Alexander reached on an error, and Jade Moreno closed out the scoring for the frame when she doubled to right center to score Alexander and Cara Pitman, giving the Huskies a 13-4 lead.

In the fifth, Dominguez added an RBI single and Cara Pitman earned an RBI on a fielder's choice to close out the season-high scoring output for the Huskies.

Breana Herrera led the 11-hit offense with her first career three-hit game, going 3-3 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored. Maddy Bailey finished off a strong week at the plate going 2-4 with the homer, three RBI and two runs. Madison Dominguez added two hits and Briseno and Moreno each drove in a pair.

Leah Hammack earned the win, her second of the series, as she tossed three scoreless innings of three-hit relief, needing just 30 pitches to move to 4-9 on the season.

The Lions (6-43 | 1-23 SLC) had just six hits on the day, two coming off the bat of Tatum Wright, who had the homer and three RBI. Madison Kloepper (4-14), the first of four ETAMU hurlers on the day, took the loss as she lasted just a third of an inning while giving up two walks, and the homer to Bailey.

HCU finished the brutal six games in five-days road stretch winning four of six, including the last three in a row to improve to 10-34 overall and 7-17 in the Southland. The Huskies remain one game behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the final postseason berth as the Islanders held serve at home with a huge sweep of their own over Northwestern State.

Just one series remains for HCU, who will host Lamar University for three games next weekend. The Huskies and Cardinals will play a double-header on Friday before a "Senior Day" finale on the final day of the regular season. TAMUCC will be at Stephen F. Austin for their final series of the regular season.
