BSB: Huskies Drop Series Opener at Southeastern

HCU dug itself a 7-0 hole and never recovered

HAMMOND, La. – HCU baseball fell behind from the jump and never got back into the game as the Huskies fell in Southland Conference play, 12-2 in seven innings, at Southeastern on Friday night.

The Lions (26-17, 14-8 SLC) jumped on HCU (18-22, 10-12 SLC) opener Trent Barnes, touching up the right-hander for three runs on two hits as he hit three batters among the five he faced in the bottom of the first. After turning the ball over to Joshua Caravalho in relief, the Huskies then saw Southeastern add four its total in the second inning on four hits and a pair of walks for a 7-0 lead through two.

The Huskies opened the third with consecutive doubles off the bats of Preston Curtis and Jack Walker to get on the board with Walker also scoring two batters later when Jeremy Rader grounded out to score him from third. SLU's Blaise Priester answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the third to make it an 8-2 ballgame.

A pair of scoreless frames followed before the Lions added a single run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to end the game there.

Walker finished the evening going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

HCU and SLU will play game two of their three-game series on Saturday, Apr. 25, at 1:00 p.m.
