HOUSTON – HCU fell into a 2-0 hole early in the second half but stormed back with three goals in an 18-minute span to secure a 3-2 victory over Prairie View A&M on Thursday night at Sorrels Field
The Huskies (4-4) controlled a good portion of the possession early but the first shot came after the 15 minute mark with Isabella Alamo putting a shot on target that was stopped by a Prairie View (1-6) defender. Two minutes later,
Olivia Rossman had a shot on target stopped by PV goalkeeper Nenah Jackson. The Panthers found the net with less than four minutes to go in the first half with Niasia Goodwin passing the ball ahead to Ashanti Hall who took one touch toward the middle of the field and split a pair of HCU defenders before slotting the ball into the bottom left corner.
In the second half, HCU came out looking for an equalizer but the visitors struck in the 52
nd minute when Destiny Twiggs took possession of the ball near the top of the box and let fly from outside the 18-yard box and put the ball into the top left corner to double the PV lead. The Huskies then started to pick up the offensive pressure, firing off 15 shots the rest of the way.
Goal number one came in the 65
th minute when
Alexia Murillo's free kick was saved by a defender in front of goal but
Jasmine Diaz was there to clean up the rebound and score her first collegiate goal. Less than five minutes later, a handball in the box sent Rossman to the spot where she converted the PK into the top left corner to even the score, 2-2.
The game-winner came with less than nine minutes left to play. The Huskies had possession close with
Madison Stormberg having a shot blocked before Alamo put a try on target that was saved. The rebound went to
Cloe Baugh who had a shot on goal stopped by a PV defender but it rebounded right back to her and the freshman put it into the back of the net for her first college goal.
The Huskies held a 22-6 advantage in shot attempts and earned eight corners to the Panthers' two. Rossman's goal was her second of the year and with three assists she has been a part of five of the team's 10 goals this season.
Thursday night's victory was the second time this season the Huskies have come from a 2-0 deficit to win a game 3-2. In the second game of the season, HCU went to Stephenville and fell behind 2-0 to Tarleton State before fighting back for the 3-2 win.
The Huskies will close out non-conference play this Sunday, Sept. 14, on the road against Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La. at 1:00 p.m.
