Huskies finish Southland Conference play 17–13, shift focus to postseason action

Box Score
BEAUMONT, Texas – Houston Christian University dropped the final game of the Southland Conference series against Lamar in a tough 17–5 loss on Saturday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont. Despite putting together 10 hits, the Huskies couldn't keep pace with the Cardinals' high-powered offense, which exploded for 17 runs on 16 hits.

Lamar (40–15, 20–10 SLC) took early control of the game in the bottom of the second inning, posting five runs, highlighted by Matt Ryan's three-run home run to center field. The Cardinals added another run in the third to make it 6–0 before the Huskies mounted a response.

In the top of the third, HCU (26–23, 17–13 SLC) answered with a burst of offense. Tevis Payne drove in two runs with a double to left center and later came around to score on an RBI single by Parker Edwards, cutting the deficit to 6–3. The Huskies continued to chip away in the fourth when Kenneth Dutka and Payne delivered back-to-back RBI singles, bringing the score to 6–5 and briefly shifting momentum in HCU's favor.

However, Lamar wasted no time regaining control. The Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and another three in the sixth to pull away 12–5. Zane Spinn put the game out of reach in the seventh with a grand slam to right field, capping an 11-run stretch that sealed the win for Lamar.

Ben Smith took the loss for the Huskies after surrendering six runs in 2.2 innings. Jayden Shertel earned the win for the Cardinals, and Kyle Moseley notched a save with 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. With the defeat, Houston Christian finishes the regular season at 26–23 overall and 17–13 in Southland Conference play.

The Huskies conclude the regular season ranked sixth in the final Southland standings. UTRGV clinched the top seed with a 22–8 record, followed closely by Southeastern (21–8), Lamar (20–10), McNeese and Northwestern State (both 19–11). HCU sits ahead of New Orleans, A&M-Corpus Christi, Nicholls, SFA, and UIW heading into the postseason.

Next up, the Huskies travel to Huntsville for a non-conference matchup against Sam Houston on Tuesday, May 13, at 6 p.m. HCU will then begin its postseason run in the Southland Conference Tournament, opening first-round play on Thursday, May 15. Tournament finals are scheduled for May 22–24, with locations and matchups to be announced.
