SAN MARCOS, Texas – The HCU baseball team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark, but Texas State responded with eight runs over the next three innings and never looked back, handing the Huskies a 9-3 defeat.
The Huskies (22-13) got on the board quickly in the top of the first.
Kenneth Dutka led off with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a groundout by
Rhett Hendricks.
Jack Walker then drove in Dutka while reaching on an error. Walker stole second later in the inning, but was left stranded.
HCU loaded the bases in the second but couldn't capitalize, and added a second run in the third when another Bobcat miscue brought
Katcher Halligan across. However, Texas State (18-18) responded immediately in the bottom half of the frame. Coy DeFury led off with a solo home run off of HCU starter
Ben Smith who retired the side in order in each of the first two innings. Texas State then followed with a two-run double from Ryne Farber to give the Bobcats a 3–2 lead.
Texas State broke the game open in the fourth. Three walks, a double by Samson Pugh, and two HCU errors led to four more runs. The Bobcats added one more run in the fifth via a sacrifice fly after loading the bases on three straight walks.
Matthew Leiterman drew a walk to lead off the eighth, racing home two batters later when
Trevor Roper laced a double down the left field line with one out. Dutka then singled before stealing second but the HCU threat was shut down with a pair of strikeouts. The Bobcats then added one final run in the bottom half of the righth.
HCU left 12 runners on base in the loss. Dutka and Roper both finished the evening 2-for-3 at the plate. Smith (3-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing three earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts and zero walks.
