BSB: Huskies Drop Series Opener to New Orleans

HCU surrenders early lead in 10-5 series-opening loss at Maestri Field

NEW ORLEANS, La. – HCU baseball dropped the series opener to New Orleans, 10-5, Thursday night at Maestri Field. The Huskies jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Privateers responded with a six-run second inning and maintained control through the remainder of the game.

Rhett Hendricks led HCU (22-14, 14-5 SLC) at the plate, launching a three-run homer and driving in three of the team's five runs. Parker Edwards and Katcher Halligan each added an RBI, while Kenneth Dutka and Jeremy Rader collected two hits and a walk apiece. Louis Castano struck out five in four innings but gave up seven earned runs on nine hits. NIck Ferazzi and Caleb Matthews were solid out of the bullpen, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts to finish out the game.

The Huskies got on the board in the opening frame with Dutka hitting a leadoff single through the right side. He then advanced to second on a groundout and scored three batters later on a Halligan RBI single. Castano then struck out the side in the botto half of the inning.

In the top of the second, Jeremy Rade led off with a single before moving up a base on another Dutka single. With two on and one out, Hendricks extended HCU's lead with a three-run shot to left, making it 4-0. However, New Orleans struck back in the bottom half. A combination of singles, a wild pitch, and a defensive miscue helped the Privateers plate their first run. Matt Gonzalez and Alexander Saunier followed with RBI singles before Bryan Loriga flipped the lead with a three-run homer to left, putting UNO ahead 6-4.

Trevor Roper singled to get the fourth inning started, moving up to second on a one-out walk to Hendricks and then scoring on a two-out single up the middle off the bat of Edwards to make it a 6-5 game. Gonzalez struck again for New Orleans in the fourth, though, sending a solo shot to left-center to make it 7-4.

In the fifth, UNO pulled away with three runs on three hits while taking advantage of an HCU error to go ahead, 10-5. The Huskies struggled to get much going offensive over the final four frames with a walk in the seventh accounting for the team's only baserunner.

The series continues Friday, April 18, with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
