BSB: Huskies Complete Series Sweep with 9-7 Win Over UIW

Edwards' Grand Slam Leads HCU to Series Sweep

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – HCU baseball secured a series sweep over UIW with a 9-7 victory on Sunday afternoon, capping off a strong offensive weekend at Sullivan Field.

The Huskies (7-3, 3-0 SLC) jumped out to a commanding start, plating six runs in the top of the first inning. Parker Edwards delivered the biggest hit of the frame, crushing a grand slam to left-center after HCU loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter. Rhett Hendricks added an RBI single and Robert Oropeza brought in a run with a sacrifice bunt to give HCU an early 6-0 lead.

UIW (7-5, 0-3 SLC) responded with a run in the bottom of the first and cut the deficit to 6-3 in the second after a two-run homer by Hernandez. The Cardinals continued to chip away, adding two more runs in the third and another in the fourth to even the score at 6-6.

HCU regained the lead in the fifth when Trevor Roper drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, and the Huskies extended their advantage in the seventh on a two-run double by Edwards, pushing the score to 9-6. UIW managed to scratch across one more run in the eighth, but HCU's bullpen held firm, with Nick Ferazzi and Warden shutting the door over the final four innings.

Edwards led the Huskies at the plate, going 2-for-5 with six RBIs, including his grand slam and a key double. Halligan reached base three times and scored twice, while Hendricks added two hits and an RBI.

On the mound, starter Ben Smith worked three innings, allowing five runs while striking out four. Jett Feltman picked up the win and combined with three other relievers to allow just two runs over six innings.  Ben Norton came into the game with a runner on and two outs, coming up with a clutch strikeout to earn the save.

The Huskies outscored UIW 33-22 over the weekend, clinching all three games on the road. HCU will look to carry its momentum into its SLC home opener next week as it hosts McNeese on Friday at Husky Field.
