BSB: HCU Secures 6-2 Victory Over McNeese with Five-Run Fifth Inning

Huskies Remain Unbeaten in Conference Play

HOUSTON, Texas – A dominant fifth inning propelled HCU to a 6-2 win over McNeese on Friday night at Husky Field, opening the three-game Southland Conference series on a high note. The Huskies capitalized on timely hits and defensive miscues by the Cowboys to take control of the game and secure the victory.

HCU (8-3, 4-0 SLC) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Parker Edwards launched a solo home run to left field, giving the Huskies an early 1-0 lead. The game remained a tight defensive battle until the fifth inning, when both teams put runs on the board.

McNeese (10-2, 3-1 SLC) tied the game in the top of the fifth after a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt allowed Edwards Jr. to score an unearned run. However, HCU responded in the bottom half of the inning with a five-run explosion.

Matthew Leiterman led off the frame with a hit and came around to score on a single by Rhett Hendricks, putting the Huskies ahead 2-1. Trevor Roper followed with a groundout that brought Robert Oropeza home for another run. The momentum continued as a passed ball allowed Hendricks to cross the plate, and a throwing error by the Cowboys' shortstop enabled Kenneth Dutka to score. Luke Bard capped off the rally, reaching on another McNeese error that allowed him to advance to third while Dutka scored, extending the lead to 6-1.

The Cowboys attempted a comeback in the seventh inning when Simon Larranaga delivered an RBI single to bring McNeese within four runs, but HCU's bullpen held firm to close out the game.

Edwards started on the mound for the Huskies, tossing four innings of one-hit ball while striking out six and allowing no earned runs. Louis Castano (2-0) earned the win in relief, pitching three strong innings with five strikeouts and one earned run. Remy Marsh and Ben Norton each contributed a scoreless inning to seal the win.

McNeese's Alexis Gravel (2-1) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out seven over 4.1 innings.

HCU returns to action tomorrow as they continue the series against McNeese at Husky Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
