BSB: Eight-run fifth propels Huskies past UIW

Eight-run outburst secures conference-opening series win

SAN ANTONIO — Houston Christian University exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning to break up a tie ballgame and went on to a convincing 10-5 victory over Incarnate Word on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field. The Huskies posted their second straight game with double-figure runs to capture a season-opening Southland Conference series win.

After trailing 1-0 early, the Huskies (6-3, 2-0 SLC) responded in the fourth when Robert Oropeza singled to right field, driving in Katcher Halligan to tie the game. Moments later, Tevis Payne doubled to left center, bringing Oropeza home and giving HCU a 2-1 lead.

The Cardinals (7-4, 0-2 SLC) quickly answered in the bottom half, leveling the score at 2-2 on a sacrifice fly from Sam Gregson.

HCU took control in the fifth, sending 12 men to the plate and putting up its largest scoring inning of the season. Halligan broke the tie with a two-RBI double down the right field line, plating Jack Walker and Matthew Leiterman.

Rhett Hendricks followed with an RBI single up the middle, and Payne added another run with a single through the left side. Trevor Roper and Leiterman each contributed two-RBI hits to cap the scoring spree, extending the Huskies' advantage to 10-2.

UIW attempted a comeback in the seventh, as Alex Calabrese launched a two-run homer to right field, followed by a solo shot from Ethan Scott. However, HCU's bullpen held firm to close out the game.

Five different Huskies recorded two hits. Tevis Payne went 2-2 with three walks, two RBI and a stolen base, while Katcher Halligan and Matthew Leiterman each went 2-4 with two RBI. Rhett Hendricks and Kenneth Dutka each had two hits and scored a run for HCU, which cranked out a baker's dozen hits on the afternoon.

Josh Caravahlo went six strong innings to pick up his third victory against no defeats on the young season, scattering six hits and two runs with five strikeouts.

The Huskies return to Sullivan Field to close the series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 pm.
