BSB: Huskies Dominate Central Michigan, 15-3

HCU’s Early Offense Powers Blowout Win

HOUSTON– The HCU baseball team put on an offensive showcase en route to a dominant 15-3 victory over Central Michigan on Saturday evening at Husky Field.

HCU (2-1) wasted no time jumping ahead, batting around in the bottom of the first inning and putting up four runs on four hits. Kenneth Dutka led off with a double over the right fielder's head before Katcher Halligan drove an RBI double to left center to score Dutka. Jack Walker then drove in another run with a single to right for a 2-0 lead. Three batters later, a Central Michigan error loaded the bases. With two outs, Robert Oropeza capped off the scoring with a two-RBI single, giving HCU a 4-0 advantage after the first.

The Huskies continued to apply pressure in the second, capitalizing on another defensive error by the Chippewas. Dutka and Halligan led off with consecutive singles before Walker laid down a bunt single with the CMU (1-2) third baseman's  throw to first sailing wide, allowing two more runs to score and Walker to move up to third. Walker then scored on a wild pitch. The Huskies then loaded the bases again before Ayden Slott brought a run home with a fielder's choice followed by an Oropeza sacrifice bunt that plated a ninth run.

HCU starter Ben Smith kept the Chippewas hitiless until the fifth inning and allowed just one run over six innings of work. He struck out four and walked one to earn the win.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Edwards singled through the left side to bring home another run followed by two more runs scoring on a throwing error. Leading 12-0, Slott then plated Matthew Leiterman with a groundout and the Huskies' lead grew to 13.

The Huskies took advantage of another CMU error in the sixth, tacking on two more runs with just one hit.

Central Michigan managed to break through in the ninth inning with three runs.

HCU finished with 15 runs on 15 hits while limiting Central Michigan to just three runs on four hits.

Dutka, Halligan and Walker, the first three hitters in the HCU lineup, each registered three hits in the win and combined to score nine runs. Bard scored three runs while hitting cleanup. Oropeza finished with three RBI.

HCU returns to action on Sunday as they look to continue their winning momentum at Husky Field.
