HOUSTON — Houston Christian Women's Basketball earned a 77–70 double-overtime victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday night at Sharp Gymnasium, improving to 4–4 overall and 2–0 in Southland Conference play.
The Huskies pulled away in the second overtime, outscoring the Lions 15–8 behind steady free-throw shooting to secure the home win. The game featured 12 ties and seven lead changes, with neither team able to create separation during regulation or the first overtime period.
Houston Christian opened the game with a 14–8 advantage after the first quarter, holding Southeastern to three made field goals. The Lions responded in the second quarter, trimming the deficit to 24–22 at halftime after outscoring HCU 19–10 in the period.
The Huskies regained momentum in the third quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field and building a 41–36 lead entering the final period. Southeastern answered again in the fourth, tying the game late and forcing overtime after the teams traded free throws and defensive stops in the closing minute of regulation.
Neither side gained more than a two-point lead in the first overtime, sending the game to a second overtime tied at 62–62. Houston Christian then shot nine free throws in the final five minutes of the second overtime to create separation and close out the win.
Jordan Jackson finished with 18 points and went a perfect 11-for-11 at the free-throw line, including four makes in the final 36 seconds.
Kamryn McLaurin led the Huskies with 29 points off the bench, shooting 10-for-13 from the field.
Grace Booth added nine points and a team-high of 11 rebounds, while
Madelyne Davis scored nine points and recorded four rebounds.
Hannah Fields chipped in six points, and HCU in total finished with 51 rebounds and forced 21 Southeastern turnovers.
Southeastern was led by Aliyah Collins, who scored a game-high 29 points, while Eryn McKinzie added 15 points and Natalie Huff finished with 12.
Houston Christian shot 38.6 percent from the field and 70.7 percent at the free-throw line, going 29-for-41 overall. The Huskies also held a 51–49 rebounding edge.
The Huskies will continue Southland Conference play on the road next Thursday, Dec. 18, traveling to Nicholls for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
