HOUSTON – HCU women's soccer senior day is set for this Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. when the Huskies face the McNeese Cowgirls at Sorrels Field in their penultimate regular season game as they vie for a spot in the 2025 Southland Conference Tournament.
The Huskies (7-8-2, 2-4-2 SLC) are coming off a 2-1 road loss to Southeastern on Thursday. HCU's goal came on a beautifully played set piece with a long ball down field from
Alexia Murillo headed on by
Paisley Barela to
Ella Remy who lofted her shot over the keeper and into the goal in stride before the ball every hit the ground.
With Thursday's results around the league, HCU has fallen to ninth place in the conference standings with eight points, one point behind seventh-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UIW who each have eight. A win on Sunday would move HCU into a tie with McNeese (4-9-4, 3-3-2 SLC) at 11 points and secure a bid to the tournament for the Huskies as UIW and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi both have one game left this season against one another.
McNeese has gone 1-1-1 over its last three games, securing a 2-1 home win against Lamar, falling at Northwestern State, 3-0, and most recently drawing at home, 1-1, against TAMUCC.
Sophomore goalkeeper Celeste Marijnissen leads all SLC keepers with 6.14 saves per game with a .748 save percentage. Rhiannon Maynes-Tourond, a freshman forward, leads McNeese with six goals this year and has 14 points on the year.
The Huskies and Cowgirls met in Lake Charles, La. last season with HCU taking a 2-1 victory.
HCU will honor its seniors and graduates after the conclusion of Sunday's game.
The Huskies finish out the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 30, in Commerce, Texas against East Texas A&M at 7:00 p.m.
