WSOC: Dillow’s Game-Winner Secures 2-1 Victory Over UIW

HCU evens its Southland Conference record at 2-2-2

HOUSTON – HCU women's soccer evened its Southland Conference record at 2-2-2 on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over UIW at Sorrels Field thanks to goals by Katya Alexis and Isabella Dillow.

HCU (7-6-2, 2-2-2 SLC) and UIW (4-5-3, 2-2-2 SLC) both got shots on goal in the sixth minute with Olivia Rossman the attacker for the Huskies. Offensive opportunities were few and far between until the 33rd minute when HCU capitalized on a corner kick. Alexia Murillo served the ball into the box where Cloe Baugh flicked the ball on with a header to the feet of Katya Alexis who got just enough of the ball to get it across the line for a 1-0 lead. Less than seven minutes later, the Cardinals' Montanna Mathews delivered a ball into the box with Atiana Lara heading the ball past Emmy McKeon to knot things at 1-1.

The tie was broken quickly in the second half, again off a corner kick. This time, it was HCU's Zylee Dominguez who sent the ball into the box and linking up with Dillow who headed the ball into the top shelf for the game-winner less than two minutes into play. After registering three saves in the first half, McKeon was forced into just one in the 88th minute to preserve the win for the Huskies.

Dillow's goal was her team-leading fourth of the season while Alexis has now scored in each of HCU's last two games. Baugh and Murillo now have three assists each for the year while Dominguez's was her first. In goal, McKeon ended the day with four saves to pick up the win.

UIW held a small 15-12 advantage in shots taken but the Huskies had seven on target to the Cardinals' five.

HCU has Thursday off before playing again next Sunday, Oct. 19, against Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas at 1:00 p.m.
