HAMMOND, La. – On Monday inside the University Center, the HCU women's basketball team dropped a 65-41 decision in Southland Conference play to league-leading Southeastern.
HCU (5-14, 2-8 SLC) took an early 3-2 lead after an
Amy Cotton layup with the ensuing free throw following a foul on the play and then evened the score at 5-5 a little more than a minute later on a
Kendall Beck jumper. A pair of three-pointers on consecutive possessions by Alexius Horne gave the Lady Lions (16-3, 10-0 SLC) a six-point lead. The Huskies responded with a layup from
Erin Maguire and a Beck three-pointer to cut it to one and then hang within four the rest of the quarter.
Southeastern scored the first six points of the second quarter to lead by 10, 26-16.
Amy Cotton and
Lyric Barr connected on shots to trim that in half and make it a five-point game, 26-21, with 6:50 left in the half. With just over a minute to go in the period, Beck connected on her third triple of the game to again make it a five-point game, 32-27, but Southeastern added a pair of buckets in the final minute to lead 36-27 at halftime.
The Huskies managed just seven points in the third quarter as SLU pulled away and held an 18-point advantage heading into the final period. Southeastern scored the first six points of the fourth and led by at least 20 the rest of the way.
Beck ended the evening with 11 points to lead HCU, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Barr finished with nine points and a team-high six rebounds while Cotton scored seven. The Huskies shot better from the floor than the hosts, connecting on 35.7 percent (15-of-42) while SLU shot 33.3 percent (24-of-72), but were undone by 21 turnovers and being out-rebounded 51 to 28.
