WSOC: HCU Closes Non-Conference Friday Before Visiting TAMUCC on Sunday

The Huskies face Prairie View A&M on the road before taking on the Islanders to open SLC play

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Friday evening at Prairie View A&M marks the final non-conference game of the 2024 campaign for HCU women's soccer before the Huskies begin Southland Conference play on Sunday in Corpus Christi, Texas against the Islanders at 1:00 p.m.

The Huskies (1-5-2) have lost their last two, falling at No 14 Texas last Thursday, 3-0, and at home to Tarleton State, 2-0, this past Sunday. Emmy McKeon, HCU's freshman goalkeeper, is currently tied for third in the SLC with 5.33 saves per game and her nine saves at Texas is tied for the third-most by an SLC keeper in a match this season.

Prairie View (1-6) has lost six-straight, including three to Southland Conference opponents. Most recently, the Panthers dropped road matchups at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UT Rio Grande Valley. Goals have been tough to come by for PVAMU with junior midfielder Emily Apodaca leading the team with two goals. Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Shynett has started the last four games in goal and across five appearances has 39 saves with 20 goals allowed.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-2-3) most recently played to a 1-1 home draw with Texas Southern and has posted a 1-2-1 record against common opponents (Sam Houston, Abilene Christian, Tarleton State, UTEP) with the Huskies so far this season. Senior Morgan Westbury has scored a team-high three goals with a pair of assists for eight points. In goal, senior Zoe Theriot leads the SLC with a .827 save percentage while her 5.38 saves per game ranks second.

HCU owns a 7-1 all-time record against Prairie View and has won the last four meetings. The most recent game came during the 2019 season, a 5-0 home win for the Huskies. In games against the Islanders, meanwhile, the Huskies hold an 8-3-2 all-time record. The two teams have alternated wins over the last five meetings with TAMUCC owning a 3-2 advantage in that stretch.

Conference play keeps rolling the following weekend with home games against Nicholls on Friday, Sept. 27, and Stephen F. Austin on Sunday, Sept. 29.
