BSB: Huskies Host SFA to Close Homestand

Huskies travel to Lafayette on Wednesday for back-to-back midweek matchups

HOUSTON, Texas – The Huskies look to snap a five-game losing streak hosting SFA on Tuesday before traveling to Lafayette to take on the Ragin Cajun on Wednesday at Russo Park in back-to-back midweek matchups.

The Huskies (13-25, 6-9 SLC) are coming off a three-game series against Nicholls getting swept, 0-3. The Huskies are led by Samuel Benjamin batting .299 average with a team-high 37 runs, 11 home runs and 18 walks. The senior has 43 hits and eight doubles in 144 at-bats this season. Tyler LaRue is riding a three-game hitting streak leading the Huskies with 37 RBIs and 12 doubles this year. Ty Hodge is coming off a great series against the Colonels going 5-for-10 (.500 avg.) in the final two games with two doubles, a run scored, and an RBI. After six hitless starts in a row, Josh Prinner went 3-for-5 on Sunday with two home runs and four RBIs.

HCU tallied their most runs in a game this season in their previous matchup against SFA this year, run-ruling the Lumberjacks, 19-9, at Constellation Field in the 2024 Sugar Land Classic on February 25th. The Huskies are 14-16 all-time against SFA claiming the final two matchups scoring a combined total 34 runs in both games. HCU is 8-7 in Houston against the former Southland foe sweeping the Lumberjacks in the 2018 conference series.

The Lumberjacks (6-34, 2-19 WAC) are led by Brock Knoerr hitting .313 average on the season with 15 runs, 11 walks, seven doubles, and four RBIs. Cole Hill leads SFA with 47 hits, 27 runs and 16 walks batting .307 average this year. Tom Biggs leads the Lumberjacks with 29 RBIs on just 35 hits with four homers, five doubles, and a triple.  

The Huskies are 1-2 against the Ragin Cajun after claiming the final game, 6-4, in the only series matchup between the two programs in 2021. Louisiana (31-11, 15-3 SBC) hold a four-game lead in the Sun Belt Conference over Coastal Carolina, Troy, and Southern Miss. The Ragin Cajun rank seventh in the nation in team cumulative ERA with a 3.69 average and rank second in the nation with six shutouts this season. Trey LaFleur leads Louisiana with a .384 batting average and a 1.147 OPS. LaFleur has tallied 26 runs, 24 RBIs, 10 walks, seven doubles, and seven home runs. Kyle DeBarge leads the team with 43 runs, 42 RBIs, and 13 home runs on the season. Conor Higgs leads the Ragin Cajun with 13 doubles and 25 walks while hitting .315 average and an OPS of 1.113 average.
