NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – The Huskies capped off another successful season finishing 4
th at the 2024 Southland Conference Championship. HCU improved each round posting rounds of 318-311-303 to finish the week at 80-over par. With Augusta securing a 67-shot lead, the battle for second place came down to the wire as the Huskies remained seven-shots back of Commerce and back and forth down the stretch with Corpus Christi. HCU played the final two holes cumulatively at even-par, including two birdies from Comparini and Nguyen at the par-4, 18
th hole.
The Huskies were led by
Alejandra Ferrer securing back-to-back top-10s at the Southland Conference Championships, tied for 9
th place last year. The sophomore carded rounds of 77-80-75 to finish alone in 10
th place. After posting three birdies in each of the first two rounds, the Mexico native added a lone birdie at the par-5, 16
th hole, in the final round while leading the Huskies with 13 pars on the day. This is Ferrer's fifth top-10 in her Husky' career and second top-10 this season, tied for 3
rd place at the 2024 HCU Huskies Invitational. Ferrer finished her second season with a 75.48 stroke average competing in nine tournaments with seven rounds of par or better.
Competing in her final tournament as a Husky,
Aysis Azarcon capped off her five-year Husky career with a 30 foot chip that landed a yard onto the green and spun to just six inches from the hole showing a clear picture of the impact Azarcon made to the program. As she was engulfed in water bottle showers from her teammates, as well as some endearing emotion, Azarcon looked back to the golf course that gave her the best finish of her final season. Clearing her best finish by 24-spots this year, Azarcon finished in 11
th place posting rounds of 79-77-77 for her best finish at the SLC Championships and her third best finish of her Husky career. The Grand Prairie native tallied two top-5s over five seasons with the Huskies.
Leading the Huskies with a three-over par, 74, in the final round,
Rocio Comparini hit a perfect drive on her final hole as a Husky at the par-4, 18
th hole. After a shot that never left the flagstick and spun back to 20 feet from the hole, the senior drilled a birdie putt that never left the center of the hole to cap off a four-year Husky career. The Argentina native recorded her best finish of her career in a tie for 13
th place following rounds of 84-77-74. Joining the ESPN+ broadcast upon the completion of her round, Comparini remarked, " It was really fun…making my last birdie as a Husky was really fun." When asked how she approached the week, Comparini expressed," I was trying to keep it simple, hit one shot at a time." Comparini further explained her feelings of completing her Husky career," It's sweet and bitter at the same time…definitely going to be super hard, those girls are my family…I'm excited for what's ahead but I'm going to miss those girls." Comparini finished her Husky career with her three-best finishes at her last three tournaments, tied for 20
th place at the home tournament and tied for 24
th place at the ULM Invitational.
Jackie Nguyen notched her best finish of the season in a tie for 20
th place. The junior waved at the camera as she strolled to her final shot of the season. After missing the green to the right of the 18
th hole, Nguyen rolled in a 35-foot putt from the fringe to cap off her third season with the Huskies. The Houston native carded rounds of 79-83-77 to finish at 26-over for the tournament. Nguyen currently has one top-10 and one-top-5 as a member of the Huskies.
Rounding out the Husky lineup,
Abigail Inocian fired rounds of 77-78 in the final two rounds in her first conference tournament. After filling in for
Lou Rousselot who carded an 83 in the opening round and sat the final two rounds due to injury, Inocian rolled in her lone birdie in the final round at the par-5, 12
th hole, to finish with three birdies for the tournament.
Claiming their third straight Southland Conference Championship, Augusta went wire-to-wire, finishing at seven-over par, to stay a perfect 3-for-3 since joining the SLC in 2021. The Jaguars claimed a 67-shot lead over Texas A&M-Commerce in second place at 74-over par. Corpus Christi secured third place at 79-over par. Augusta's Kennedy Carroll also went wire-to-wire to claim the individual title with rounds of 69-67-71. UIW's Ellen Nicholas claimed runner-up with a final round five-under par, 66, alongside Augusta's Napabhach Boon-In, both finishing at three-over par, nine-shots back.
The Huskies finished the 2023/2024 campaign with five top-10 finishes including two top-5 finishes, 2
nd place at the 2024 HCU Huskies Invitational and the conference tournament. HCU posted their lowest round of the season twice, a one-under par, 287, in the second round of the 2023 Diamante Intercollegiate and the opening round of the 2024 GCU Invitational. The Huskies individually carded 24 rounds of par or better with Rousselot claiming the two lowest rounds of the season, a six-under, 66, in the opening round of the 2024 GCU Invitational and a four-under par, 68, in the second round of the 2023 Diamante Intercollegiate.
