BSB: Huskies Steamroll the Islanders, 17-1, in Game Two

Benjamin hits back-to-back homer; Edwards tosses seven frames for his third straight win

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Huskies opened the flood gates posting 17 runs in game two to steamroll the Islanders, 17-1, at Chapman Field. The 17 runs is the second most runs by the Huskies this year, tallied 19 runs against SFA on 2/25. HCU is riding a four-game winning streak allowing an average of two runs per game, the best in the SLC in a four-game stretch this season.

The Huskies struck first in the top of the first inning after the Islanders hit the first two batters of the game, Tyler Roper and Dylan LaRue. After fouling off the first pitch and taking a ball low and away, Samuel Benjamin fired a deep three-run home run to right field to give the Huskies a, 3-0, lead. After an error by Lane Sparks to lead off the bottom of the second inning, Corpus Christi got on the board on a fielder's choice off the bat of Cade Modgling. Leading 3-1 after two frames, the Huskies continued applying pressure when Samuel Benjamin hit his second home run of the game, a solo-shot to right field, to reclaim a three run advantage for HCU. Three pitches later, Tyler LaRue doubled to left field, then scored on a single to left field off the bat of Ty Hodge. The Huskies scored another run in the top of the fourth inning when Roper hit a double down the left field line before advancing to third on a single to left center by Dylan LaRue. After Benjamin was hit-by-pitch to load the bases, Tyler LaRue hit a sacrifice fly scoring Roper to claim a 6-1 lead. HCU extended the their lead to 10-1 posting three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Hodge walked to start the inning before stealing second. After Josh Prinner drew a seven-pitch walk, Luke Bard hit a single to center field scoring Hodge. After Bard and Prinner advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch, Roper hit a sacrifice fly scoring Prinner. A two-run homer by Dylan LaRue to center field scored Bard and gave the Huskies a nine-run lead. HCU closed out game two tallying seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to seal game two, 17-1, and take a commanding, 2-0, series lead.

The Huskies (13-20, 6-5 SLC) were led by Benjamin going 2-for-3 with back-to-back home runs, four RBIs, three runs and two walks. Tyler LaRue went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, two runs and a walk while Dylan LaRue went 2-for-3 with a home run and a pair of RBIs and runs. Six Huskies tallied multi-hit games including Bard going 2-for-5 with a triple, four RBIs, two runs and a walk while Roper went 2-for-4 with a double, three runs and an RBI. Parker Edwards (4-3) earned his third straight win tossing seven frames to start the game. The senior allowed one run, no earned runs, on four hits with a walk. Jett Feltman and Mark Lopez each tossed a shutout inning of relief with a strikeout.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (16-23, 4-6 SLC) was held to four-hits in game two lead by Drake Kerr going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Chance Reisdorph and Cole Modgling each went 1-for-3 and Logan Vaughan went 0-for-3 scoring the only run for the Islanders. Riley Hunsaker (4-3) was tagged with the loss pitching three innings to start the game allowing five earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Cam Soliz relieved Hunsaker and pitched two frames, also giving up five earned runs on four hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. The Islanders used six pitchers in game two combining to allow 17 runs on 16 hits with seven walks and five hit batters.

The three-game series against Corpus Christi will conclude with the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Chapman Field.
