HAMMOND, Louisiana –
Rye Gunter and
Jett Feltman combined on a two-hitter to lead Houston Christian University 7-0 shutout victory over Southeastern Louisiana in the rubber game of the three-game Southland series on Saturday at Alumni Field. The third shutout of the season helped the Huskies take the series two games to one, capping the first series win against SLU since 2017.
After three shutout innings by both teams to start the game, the Huskies got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when
Samuel Benjamin scored on a single to third base by
Trent Baker to take a 1-0 lead. HCU extended the lead to two runs in the top of the fifth inning when
Josh Prinner scored on a squeeze play forced off a bunt by
Dylan LaRue.
The Huskies tacked on four more runs in the top of the sixth inning starting with a solo-shot by
Ty Hodge before Baker walked,
Luke Bard singled to left field, and Prinner drove them in with a three-run homer to left field to give HCU a 6-0 lead. The Huskies closed out the game by adding another run in the top of the ninth inning when Benjamin singled to right field, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on a
William Jewell RBI-single to right field to claim a 7-0 shutout win.
The Huskies (9-18, 2-4 SLC) were led by Prinner going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and two runs. Hodge went 3-for-5 with a homer and a double while Benjamin went 2-for-4 with two runs and a walk.
Rye Gunter (1-0) started the game pitching five no-hit innings with a walk and four strikeouts.
Jett Feltman notched his first save as a Husky pitching four shutout innings of relief allowing two hits with four strikeouts.
SLU (18-10, 3-3 SLC) was led by TJ Salvaggio and Rhett Rosevear each going 1-for-3 while Jude Hall went 0-for-2 with a walk. Will Kinzeler (1-2) was tagged with the loss pitching 3.2 innings to start the game allowing one earned run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Jackson Rodriguez pitched two innings of relief giving up five earned runs on six hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.
The Huskies will continue their five-game road swing when they take on Baylor in a mid-week match-up on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
