BSB: Huskies Run-Ruled by Eastern Michigan in Series Opener

HCU allows eight runs in first inning falling game one of the four-game series against EMU

HOUSTON, Texas – The Huskies were run-ruled by Eastern Michigan in series opener at Husky Field. After allowing eight runs in the top of the first, HCU battled back but couldn't hold off the Eagles in the seven-inning game one of the four-game series.

The Huskies gave up eight runs in the top of the first before Tyler LaRue scored on a wild pitch to get HCU on the board in the bottom of the second. After Eastern Michigan increased the lead to 11-1, the Huskies tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third when Trevor Roper scored on a Samuel Benjamin single through the right side before Benjamin scored on an error by EMU's second baseman, Cory Taylor. In the bottom of the fifth inning with the Eagles holding a 12-3 lead, the Huskies scored their last run of the game when Benjamin crossed home on a throwing error by Eastern Michigan's third baseman, Glenn Miller. EMU added a run in the sixth inning and run-ruled HCU adding another run in the seventh inning to take game one, 14-4.

The Huskies were led by Benjamin going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Trevor Roper went 1-for-3 with a run while Dylan LaRue went 1-for-4 with an RBI. James Kirkpatrick (0-2) was tagged with the loss pitching .2 innings to start the game allowing seven earned runs on four hits with three walks. Jarek Wells, Jonathan Valdez, and Jackson Hamilton combined for 6.1 innings of relief with five strikeouts.

Eastern Michigan was led by Logan Hugo going 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI while Blake McRae went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run and a walk. Giano Zuccaro went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a strikeout and Lucas Johnson went 1-for-3 with a pair of walk and runs with an RBI. Bobby Jones (1-1) earned the win for the Eagles pitching 6.2 innings to start the game allowing four runs, one earned run, on five hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.

The Huskies will continue the four-game series against Eastern Michigan with a double-header on Friday starting at noon at Husky Field.
