Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Huskies were downed by former SLC rival, Sam Houston State, 14-3 in a midweek matchup at Don Sanders Stadium. The Huskies hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the seven inning and a solo shot on the first pitch of the top of the ninth inning.
HCU allowed 11 runs through the first six innings before getting on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning when
William Jewell and
Josh Prinner hit home runs in back-to-back at bats. After the Bearkats increased the run total to 14 runs through eight innings, the Huskies tallied the last run of the game in the top of the ninth inning when
Graham Laxton hit a solo shot to left field.
The Huskies were led by Jewell, Prinner, and Laxton recording all three runs. Jewell went 1-for-2 with a home run and a walk, Prinner went 1-for-3 with a home run and a strikeout, and Laxton homered in his only at bat.
Samuel Benjamin keeps his multi-hit game streak alive going 2-for-5 with two singles.
Trevor Roper has hits in three-straight games going 2-for-4.
Ethan Coronel (0-1) was tagged with the loss pitching three innings to start the game allowing seven earned runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Four Husky relievers made appearances, totaling five strikeouts in five innings of relief.
Sam Houston State was led by Walker Janek going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, and a pair of runs and RBIs. Jeffrey David went 2-for-2 with a double, a run, an RBI and a walk while Wes Folse went 2-for-3 with a double, three runs and a walk. Gavi Coldiron (1-0) earned the win pitching five shutout innings to start the game with two walks and four strikeouts. Three Bearkat relievers saw action giving up three earned runs with three strikeouts in three innings of relief.
The Huskies return to Husky Field for a four-game series hosting Eastern Michigan on Thursday through Sunday.

Eastern Michigan (2-5) started the year falling to Belmont 3-1 in their season opening series. After losing 2-1 at Southern Indiana, EMU are 2-5 on the season heading to Houston. The Eagles are led by Blake McRae hitting .429 average on the season with nine hits, five RBIs, three runs and two walks in 21 at-bats. Giano Zuccaro is batting .348 average with eight hits, seven runs, six RBIs and five walks. Nick Chittum (1-1) and Drew Beckner (1-1) have earned wins for the Eagles pitching 24.2 innings combined allowing nine runs, six earned runs, on 17 hits with 21 total strikeouts to just nine walks.
