Alejandra Ferrer and Abigail Inocian tally points for HCU with victories

GULFPORT, Mississippi – The Huskies tie the #1 seed, James Madison, in match one of the Great River Cup at Windance Country Club on Monday with a 2-1-2 result. HCU's Alejandra Ferrer and Abigail Inocian claimed individual wins in match one. Match two against Georgia State will continue on Tuesday starting at 7 a.m.

Alejandra Ferrer started her match against JMU's Kayleigh Reinke winning the opening hole and claiming a two-up lead after holing a par at the par-3, 4th hole. After falling the 5th hole, a birdie at the par-5, 7th hole, gave Ferrer a one-up lead thru nine holes. After Reinke tied the match with a birdie at the par-4, 11th hole, the Mexico native went one-under par on her last seven holes including a birdie at the par-5, 16th hole, to claim three-holes down the stretch en route to a 3&1 win. Ferrer is currently down two thru 11 holes in match two against Georgia State's Padgett Chitty.

After starting match one down one after the opening hole, Abigail Inocian got her match against JMU's Amber Mackiewicz back to all-square after two holes with a par at the par-3, 2nd hole. After falling the fourth hole, Inocian rebounded winning the par-4, 5th hole. The Allen native made the turn all-square thru nine holes before claiming three holes in a row including a birdie at the par-4, 11th hole. After a bogey at the par-4, 14th hole, brought the match back to a two-up lead for Inocian, the freshman closed out the match with a par at the par-5, 16th hole, to claim a 3&2 win. Inocian is currently down one thru six holes in match two against Georgia State's Noemie Boulbes.

Rocio Comparini halved the opening match against JMU's Maria Atwood. Comparini lost the opening hole before rolling in a birdie at the par-3, 2nd hole, to even the match. After falling the third hole, the Argentina native claimed the 4th and 5th holes to hold a one-up lead through five holes. The senior made the turn at all-square before claiming the par-4, 14th hole, with a bogey. After Atwood carded a birdie at the par-4, 17th hole, to even the match, both competitors pared the final hole of the match to end match one with halves. Comparini currently holds a two-up lead thru 12 holes against Georgia State's Silka Solomon heading into day two.

Jackie Nguyen clinged to a four-down deficit thru six holes matching up against JMU's Kendall Turner in match one. Nguyen rolled in birdie at the par-5, 7th hole, only to see her competitor roll in an eagle to increase Turner's lead to five-up thru seven holes. After carding a birdie at the par-4, 9th hole, to minimize the deficit to four holes, the junior knocked in another birdie at the par-4, 13th hole, to get within three holes. A blemish at the par-4, 14th hole, made the Houston native dormie with four holes left but Nguyen battled winning the 15th hole with a par, and the 16th hole with a birdie to extend the match. Turner closed out the match 2&1 with matching pars at the par-4, 17th hole, to earn a point for the Dukes. Nguyen is currently down four thru 11 holes of match two against Georgia State's Pariya Sanpanawat.

Lucia Allub battled JMU's Amelia Williams in match one. Williams concluded match one at two under par thru 10 holes to defeat Allub 9&8. The Argentina native matched up against Georgia State's Mahina Leveau in match two. Leveau carded two birdies and finished at even-par thru 12 holes en route to a 7&6 victory over the Husky senior.

Aysis Azarcon, competing as an individual, matched up against JMU's Tatum Walsh in the opening match. Azarcon claimed four-holes in a row, 3rd thru the 6th holes, with four straight pars to take a four-up lead through six holes. After a blemish at the eighth hole, the graduate senior birdied the par-4, 9th hole, to make the turn holding a four-up lead. Minor hiccups at the 10th, 11th, 12th and 14th holes gave Walsh the momentum bringing the match back to all-square thru 14 holes. The Grand Praire native bounced back claiming the 16th hole with a par en route to a one-up win in match one. Azarcon took on ULM's Sonya Weerasinghe in match two. Azarcon got off to a fast start claiming the opening hole and rolled in a birdie at the par-5, 3rd hole, to take a two-up lead thru three holes. A trio of pars on holes five thru seven gave Azarcon a five-up lead through seven holes. Pars at the par-4, 9th hole, and par-4, 11th hole, helped the senior win three-straight holes and close the match out 8&7 thru 11 holes.

The Huskies will continue match two on Tuesday starting at 7 a.m. Upon completion of match two with Georgia State holding a 4-0-1 lead, HCU will play UAB or Southern Mississippi in the final match starting at the conclusion of match two.
