HOUSTON – On Sunday afternoon inside Sharp Gym, the HCU women's basketball team got career-high scoring efforts from a trio of players as the Huskies defeated visiting Southwestern, 62-49.
Freshmen Kendal Beck and
Madelyne Davis, along with sophomore
Lyric Barr, each registered career-bests in scoring in the win for the Huskies (2-4). Beck led all players with a 23-point, 14-rebound double-double while blocking three shots and recording two assists and two steals. Each of those stats marks a career-high for the freshman as she shot 9-of-12 from the field.
Davis, meanwhile, played a full 40 minutes and connected on 5-of-10 from the floor while finishing with 15 points and a career-best six assists. Barr, meanwhile, set a new career-high with 12 points, connecting on 3-of-8 from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line.
Beck got the scoring started following the tip-off, dropping in a layup, with Southwestern (2-4) answering on its first trip down the floor with a triple out of the hands of Adrianna McCoy. The Huskies then went on an 11-0 run, keeping the visitors off the board for more than five minutes to go ahead, 13-3. SU got back to within seven but HCU pushed its lead up to 15, 23-8, following a
Makolla Bagayegou layup in the final minute of the quarter.
Barr knocked down a three early in the second quarter before the Pirates scored the next seven to but it down to 11. Over the last six minutes of the half, HCU again pushed its lead back up to 18, 37-19, at the half.
A 6-2 start to the second half, including four points from Beck, gave the Huskies their largest lead of the game, 43-21, but the Pirates responded with a 12-point run to pull within 10 at the 3:28 mark. The Huskies then took a 46-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
HCU extended its lead, again, with five different players scoring in the early-going to go back ahead by 19, 57-38. The Huskies kept the Pirates at bay, including leading 61-42 with less than four minutes to go as SU cut its deficit down to the 13-point difference at the end in part due to four made free throws over the final 1:07 of the game.
The Huskies shot 42 percent (21-of-50) from the field and knocked down 78.9 percent (15-of-19) from the foul line. Southwestern, meanwhile, finished the day shooting 30 percent (18-of-60) overall. HCU was out-shot for the first time this season, 39-35, while forcing 15 turnovers.
