FORT WORTH, Texas – HCU women's basketball fell in its season opener on Tuesday evening, falling to a TCU squad receiving votes in top-25 polls by a 78-41 final at Schollmaier Arena.
The Huskies (0-1) took a 6-4 lead after a
Jo Oly layup with 3:23 left in the first quarter but TCU (1-0) scored the final six points of the quarter to lead 10-6 after the game's first 10 minutes.
Makolla Bagayegou knocked down a pair of free throws early in the second quarter but the Horned Frogs scored the game's next 17 points to lead 27-8 with 4:13 left in the half. The TCU lead got as high as 22 before halftime but
Tove Caesar hit a three and
Victoria Dixon dropped in a layup just before the buzzer for a 36-19 ballgame at the intermission.
HCU pulled as close as 15 twice in the third quarter, the second time coming with 5:28 on the clock with
Erin Maguire connecting on a pair of free throws to make it 40-25. The Horned Frogs pulled away from there, however, and pushed the lead into the 30's in the fourth.
The Huskies held a 44-30 advantage on the boards with Oly pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds while also scoring six points. HCU was undone, however, by 36 turnovers. Maguire led HCU with eight points while Bagayegou added seven.
TCU was led by Sedona Prince with 29 points while Hailey Van Lith finished with 21.
The Huskies head to west Texas for a Thursday, Nov. 7, matchup against Texas Tech at 6:00 p.m.
