LAKE CHARLES, La. – HCU women's soccer makes its final road trip of the 2024 season this Sunday when the Huskies face the McNeese Cowgirls at 1:00 p.m. at Cowgirl Field.
HCU (4-8-5, 2-3-3 SLC), with two games left in the regular season, stands in ninth place in the league standings with nine points. Just three points separate the Huskies from three teams tied for fifth place with the top eight teams in the standings qualifying for the SLC Tournament. McNeese (3-12-1, 0-6-1 SLC) is currently in 10
th place with one point.
The Huskies are coming off a weekend in which they earned four points in the conference standings, first playing defending champion Lamar to a 0-0 draw on Friday before handing Southeastern just its third loss in conference play, 3-0, on Sunday.
Sunday's win over Southeastern was, perhaps, the Huskies most complete game of the season as they held the Lady Lions to just one shot attempt while putting 10 of 17 shots on the SLU goal. Sophomore
Olivia Rossman scored twice in the win to earn SLC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Rossman now has six goals this season with four of those coming in the Huskies' last four games.
McNeese owns a 3-4 record on its home turf but has not recorded a victory since a 4-0 win over Louisiana Christian on Sept. 13. Senior Jackie Kelly has played all but 45 minutes in goal for the Cowgirls, recording a conference-leading 98 saves to average 6.13 saves per game with a 2.08 goals against average. Senior forward Isabelle Smith leads McNeese with six points on two goals and two assists.
The Huskies are 7-9-2 all-time against McNeese with the Cowgirls winning the last two meetings, both last season. McNeese earned a 2-1 regular season win at Sorrels Field before knocking the Huskies out of the SLC Tournament, 1-0. The last meeting in Lake Charles was a 1-0 HCU win in 2022 with
Katie Marker scoring the game-winner.
The Huskies close out the 2024 regular season at Sorrels Field on Friday, Nov. 1, against Texas A&M-Commerce at 7:00 p.m.
