Huskies take three sets to one in conference match win

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana – Houston Christian University (HCU) volleyball notched a crucial Southland Conference win against McNeese, taking the match 3-1 with set scores of 25-17, 25-18, 19-25, and 25-21.

Houston Christian got off to a strong start in the first set, taking advantage of McNeese's attack errors and quickly building a lead. Key kills from Emerald Jacobs and Audrey Pearce kept the Huskies in control, but McNeese attempted to rally behind McKenzie Moore and Grace McLaughlin. Despite their efforts, HCU's consistent offense and solid defense closed out the set with a 25-17 win.

The second set saw a tightly contested battle early on, with both teams trading points. HCU pulled ahead through standout plays by Jacobs and Pearce, while McNeese countered with contributions from Moore and Allana Archie. However, a series of McNeese errors allowed HCU to gain momentum, and well-placed kills from Jacobs and Bianca Byerly helped secure a 25-18 victory, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

McNeese found its footing in the third set, driven by strong performances from Ana Garza and Archie. Although HCU fought back to tie the score multiple times, McNeese capitalized on key offensive plays and outlasted the Huskies 25-19, extending the match to a fourth set.

In the final set, both teams battled back and forth, exchanging the lead several times. McNeese was fueled by Garza and Jacobs, but HCU's resilience shone through as they capitalized on McNeese's errors and ramped up their blocking game. With the set tied at 21-21, HCU pushed ahead thanks to a clutch kill by Byerly, who sealed the 25-21 win and the match.

HCU was led by an outstanding performance from Emerald Jacobs, who finished with 17 kills and 3 service aces. Audrey Pearce added 13 kills and a team-high 4 blocks, while Ravyn Dash contributed 11 kills. Grace McLaughlin orchestrated the offense with 48 assists and chipped in defensively with 2 blocks. On the back row, Tatiana Evans led the defense with 15 digs, followed by Byerly with 14 and Jacobs with 13.

The Huskies will next host Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m.
