HCU Secures a Hard-Fought Win in Sharp Gym


 
HOUSTON, Texas - The Houston Christian volleyball team faced Lamar University at the Sharp Gym earlier today in a highly competitive match, ultimately finishing with a victory after five sets. The final score was Lamar University 25, 23, 33, 14, 9, while Houston Christian secured the win with scores of 23, 25, 31, 25, and 15.

In the first set, Lamar started strong with a kill from Maja Malinowska, who proved to be a key player throughout. HCU responded with kills from Allana Archie and Ravyn Dash, keeping the score close. Despite multiple attack errors by both teams, Lamar maintained a slight lead, bolstered by contributions from Malinowska and Lyric Jordan. HCU fought back with kills from Emerald Jacobs and Audrey Pearce, but Lamar capitalized on service aces and HCU's errors. The set remained tight until Lamar secured the win, 25-23, with a final kill by Jordan.

HCU opened the second set with a strong start, taking advantage of attack errors from Lamar's Malinowska and Cathey to gain a 4-0 lead, highlighted by a kill from Jacobs. Lamar responded with kills from Gonzalez and Jordan, narrowing the gap to 6-3. However, HCU maintained its momentum, with Jacobs dominating offensively and extending the lead to 9-7. Despite some errors from HCU, including service mistakes, Lamar struggled to close the gap. Jacobs continued to be a force at the net, supported by solid play from Grace McLaughlin. With the set tied at 20-20, HCU surged ahead after a service ace by Psencik and a kill by Pearce, reaching set point at 24-22. A final kill by Dash sealed the set at 25-23, giving HCU a 2-0 lead in the match.

In a tightly contested third set, both HCU and Lamar battled for control, with the score remaining close throughout. Emerald Jacobs and Ravyn Dash powered HCU's offense, while Maja Malinowska and Lyric Jordan stood out for Lamar. The set featured multiple ties, with Lamar edging ahead at key moments. Despite HCU's strong defense, including crucial blocks by Audrey Pearce and digs from Tatiana Evans, Lamar ultimately secured the set win 33-31, clinching it with a final kill from Malinowska.

HCU started strong in the fourth set, quickly taking a 5-1 lead with key kills from Jacobs and Ana Garza, supported by solid defense from Pearce and Evans. Despite some errors from both sides, HCU maintained control throughout the set. Lamar's Jordan and Malinowska attempted to close the gap with timely kills, but HCU's offense, led by Jacobs and Dash, was relentless. A service ace from Avery Psencik and a late block sealed the set for HCU, 25-14, pushing the match into a decisive fifth set.

In the deciding set, HCU came out strong, with Jacobs and Garza leading the offense. The team quickly built a 5-1 lead, thanks to crucial blocks and kills from Pearce and Garza. Despite a few attack errors that allowed Lamar to stay within reach, HCU maintained control. Dash continued to deliver key points, while McLaughlin's service ace pushed HCU closer to victory. Lamar fought back with kills from Ashlyn Gamble and Malinowska, but Garza's final kill sealed the set 15-9, securing the match win for HCU.

HCU showcased impressive leadership on the court, highlighted by standout performances from several players. Emerald Jacobs led the team with a career-high 28 kills, closely followed by Ravyn Dash with a personal best of 21 kills, while Ana Garza contributed 9 kills. Grace McLaughlin excelled as the primary setter, delivering 53 assists and notching 2 service aces. On defense, Tatiana Evans recorded a career-high 36 digs, demonstrating her crucial role in keeping rallies alive, alongside McLaughlin's 17 digs and Byerly's 15 digs. Audrey Pearce was a force at the net with 7 blocks, supported by Garza with 4 blocks and Allana Archie contributing 3.

Next up, HCU will face McNeese on October 17 (Thu) at 6:30 p.m. in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
