HOUSTON – Senior
Katie Marker pulled the HCU women's soccer team within one early in the second half after the Huskies trailed 2-0 at the half but Texas State held off the Huskies in a 3-1 decision on Sunday evening at Sorrels Field.
Less than three minutes into the game, a free kick by Victoria Meza was stopped by a diving
Chloe Bagshaw who made another big stop in the 14
th minute to keep it scoreless. Texas State (3-3) broke through in the 18
th minute with a goal by Olivia Wright that hit the crossbar and bounced straight down and then into the goal. Goal two came off the foot of Mady Soumare just over 10 minutes later.
In the 48
th minute,
Emily Jaimes crossed a ball into Marker who beat the Bobcats' keeper to the top shelf to put HCU (1-3) on the board and make it a one-goal game. Trailing 2-1, HCU out-shot the Bobcats 9-3 in the second half with six shots on goal but Texas State again made it a two-goal game with a goal off the foot of Mya Ulloa in the 78
th minute.
Marker's goal was her first of the season and ninth of her career. As a team, HCU put eight of 12 shot attempts on goal while Texas State finished with 14 shot attempts.
The Huskies remain in the Bayou City this coming week for a pair of away games, first vs. Houston at the Carl Lewis International Complex on Thursday, Sep. 7, before taking on Texas Southern on Sunday, Sep. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at Durley Stadium.
