HOUSTON – This Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. at Husky Stadium, the HCU football team aims to build off last weekend's 34-19 win at Southeastern when the Huskies take on the Lamar Cardinals. Saturday's game will be shown live on ESPN+ with Garrett Jones providing play-by-play.
Following three-straight games on the road, the Huskies (2-2, 1-0 SLC) are back on their home turf with a chance to get out to the program's first-ever 2-0 start in conference play. SLC play opened last weekend when HCU earned its first win over Southeastern, on the road, with a 34-19 victory in which the Huskies never trailed.
Quarterback
Colby Suits earned SLC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance at Southeastern, finishing with 282 yards passing with three touchdowns and zero interceptions while rushing for one touchdown. He is currently ninth in the nation with an average of 15.22 yards per completion and his eight touchdown passes lead the conference and have him tied for 10
th in the country. Junior running back
Darryle Evans had a breakout game with 173 yards on 21 carries for the fourth-highest single-game rushing total in program history.
Suits' top target so far this season,
Karl Reynolds, is tied for second in the FCS with four touchdown receptions through four games. He has 14 catches for 225 yards this season and has hauled in nine touchdown receptions in 12 games as a Husky.
HCU boasts the top rushing defense in the league so far, bolstered by a stout performance against the Lions. The Huskies held Southeastern to just 29 yards on the ground on 22 carries, the second-lowest rushing yards allowed in program history. For the season, HCU is holding opponents to 124.8 yards per game on the ground, ranking 31
st in the nation.
Lamar heads into Saturday's game coming off its first win of the season, a 38-0 victory at home over Lincoln (CA). The Cardinals opened the season with a home loss to eighth-ranked Idaho and then dropped matchups at ULM and South Dakota.
Junior running back Khalan Griffin is currently third in the conference in rushing yards per game, averaging 66.3 per outing after racking up 117 yards on 12 carries last weekend. Quarterback Robert Coleman is completing 68.5 percent (63-of-92) of his passes this season for 645 yards and four touchdowns with three interceptions.
The Cardinals are led defensively by senior linebacker Foday Jalloh who has 24 total tackles and is tied for the team lead with two sacks. Lamar has the top pass defense in the conference thus far, limiting opponents to just 111.3 yards per game through the air. The Cardinals have posted three-straight games allowing fewer than 100 yards passing.
HCU has won the last two meetings vs. the Cardinals, including a 37-34 win in Beaumont, Texas last season. The last time the two played in Houston was during the 2019 season and resulted in a 31-26 Huskies' win. HCU is 3-4 all-time vs. Lamar.
The Huskies travel to Thibodaux, La. the following weekend as they march along in conference play against the Nicholls Colonels at 3:00 p.m. at Guidry Stadium.
