HAMMOND, La. – The HCU football program begins Southland Conference play this Saturday evening at Strawberry Stadium in a matchup with preseason league favorite Southeastern at 6:00 p.m. The game will be aired on ESPN+ while Garrett Jones will provide audio play-by-play at HCUHuskies.com.

The Huskies (1-2) close out a tough three-game road stretch that started with a trip to FBS-member Western Kentucky followed by a trip last weekend to face a UT Martin team that has won two-straight Ohio Valley Conference titles.

The HCU defense remains among the best in the nation at making stops in the backfield, ranking third in the FCS with an average of 10 tackles for loss per game. In the Southland Conference, the next closest team in the category is Nicholls with 6.5 TFLs per game. Senior Judas McKenzie leads the Huskies with four TFLs and at least one in each game so far this season.

Redshirt freshman running back Champ Dozier is 20th nationally in all purpose yards, averaging 124 yards per game. He leads the SLC in rushing, averaging 73.7 yards per game thanks to 221 yards on 39 carries. In the conference, Dozier ranks second behind UIW's Brandon Porter who is averaging 125.3 all purpose yards per game.

Southeastern (0-3) is playing its home opener after opening the season with a pair of FBS road games at Mississippi State and South Alabama followed by a trip to Eastern Washington last Saturday. The Lions have split snaps at quarterback between Zachary Clement and Eli Sawyer with the two combining to complete 54-of-87 (62.1 percent) of their passes with five touchdowns and two interceptions. Defensively, defensive back Ian Goodly ranks seventh in the FCS in tackles with 12.3 per game.

The Huskies and Lions played each other every year from 2014 through 2019 but have played just once since. That meeting came during the 2021 campaign in Hammond, La. with Southeastern taking the 61-24 victory.

HCU returns home the following weekend, hosting Lamar on Saturday, Sep. 30, at Husky Stadium with a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
