WGOLF: HCU Kicks off the Season at MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial

The Huskies head to Missouri to start fall schedule

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – The Huskies kick of the fall schedule at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial at Rivercut Golf Course. The 54-hole tournament will commence with 36-holes played Monday, Sept. 11th and conclude with 18-holes on Tuesday, Sept. 12th. 
 
The MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial returns to the 6,282-yard, par-72, Rivercut Golf Course featuring a 17-team field including host Missouri State, HCU, Wichita State, Loyola Chicago, Omaha, Wyoming, Western Illinois, UTEP, California Baptist, Austin Peay, Lindenwood, TAMUCC, Oklahoma City, Drury, Creighton, Oral Roberts, and Southern Illinois. 
 
2022/23 Recap 
 
The Huskies closed out the 2023 season with a third-place finish at the Southland Conference. The Huskies tallied two tournament wins at the 2023 Islander Classic and the 2023 UTRGV Invitational on their way to finishing in the top-5 in nine of 10 tournaments across the season.
 
All eight Huskies from the 2022/23 season return to the Huskies roster for the 2023/24 season, including Graduate Students, Elise Parel and Aysis Azarcon. Senior Elise Parel looks to pick up right where she left off from last season earning Southland All-Conference First Team following a fifth-place individual finish at the Southland Conference championship. Parel racked up four individual wins during her 2022-2023 campaign including the 2022 Little Rock Women's Golf Classic, 2023 Islander Classic, 2023 UTRGV Invitational and 2023 HCU Husky Invitational. Parel recorded 13 rounds at even-par or better including three sub-70 rounds and a scoring average of 72.73. Parel was also named two-time Southland Golfer of the Month, and the HCU Jan Edds Female Athlete of the Year for the 2022/23 academic year.  
 
Azarcon, participating in her fifth season as a Husky alongside Parel, completed 21 rounds for the Huskies, recording two top-25 finishes on the season.  
 
Junior Lou Rousselot is coming off a T-7th place finish at the 2023 Southland Conference tournament as well as five other top-10's during the 2022-2023 season including a 2nd place finish at the Islander Classic. Rousselot fired the team low round for last year's season with a six-under, 66, at the USA Intercollegiate and claimed SLC Golfer of the Month in September. After being named to the Southland All-Conference Second Team, Rousselot looks to continue to improve her tournament scoring average that went from 76.39 in 2022 to 73.90 in 2023. 
 
Sophomore Alejandra Ferrer is coming of a breakout rookie season claiming three top-10's and a 3rd place finish at the 2023 UTRGV Invitational. Ferrer recorded three rounds of par or better including back-to-back sub-70 rounds at the UTRGV Invitational. Ferrer competed in seven tournaments for the Huskies with a stroke average of 76.29. Fellow sophomore, Josalyn Keller, competed in 11 rounds as a freshman for the Huskies, with her best place finish coming at the 2023 UTRGV Invitational after a seven-over par total, 220, to finish in 11th place individually.  
 
Junior Jackie Nguyen competed in eight tournaments for HCU during the 2022-2023 season which resulted in six top-20 finishes and a 5th place finish at the 2023 Islander Classic. Nguyen kicked off last season with two rounds of par or better at the 2022 USA Intercollegiate resulting in a T-13th place finish. Nguyen posted four rounds of par or better on the season and finished in 20th place at the conference tournament.  
 
Seniors Lucia Allub and Rocio Comparini also return for their senior campaign for the Huskies. Allub made five starts for the Huskies during the 2022-2023 campaign including a T-12th place finish at the 2022 Bearkat Invitational. Allub posted her lowest round of the season at the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic with an even par, 72, and recorded a scoring average of 77.38. Comparini carded 21 rounds for the Huskies during the 2022/23 year, recording a low-round, 71, at the 2022 Lady Red Wolves Classic.  
 
New Additions for 2023/24 
 
Alongside the return of all eight of the previous season's players, Freshman Abigail Inocian will join the Huskies for the upcoming season. Inocian hails from Allen, TX. Inocian attended Allen High school where she captured four individual titles and earned the Most Improved Player and Player of the Year as a Lady Eagle. Inocian served as team captain during her last two seasons at Allen High School. 
 
Head Women's Coach for the Huskies, Jordan Jeffers, also returns to the Huskies' roster following three seasons as Head Men's and Women's golf coach at Charleston Southern University. Last season, Jeffers was awarded the Big South Co-Coach of the Year highlighted by two wins at the Eisto Classic Invitational and the Buccaneer Classic. Jeffers is no stranger to HCU, serving as the Assistant Coach for the men's and women's programs at HCU from 2014-2019. During his time with the Huskies, the women's program won back-to-back Southland Conference Championships in 2017 and 2018 advancing to the NCAA Women's Regional Tournament both years. Now head coach for the Women's program, Jeffers is "excited to get the season started this week at Missouri State." Jeffers commented, "we have one of the strongest tournament schedules in program history set up for our ladies and they are ready to meet all the challenges ahead. With all our players returning from last season, we have a lot of great leadership on our team, so expectations are high for our season." 
 
The Huskies will send out Elise Parel, Lucia Allub, Lou Rousselot, Jackie Nguyen, and Alejandra Ferrer for the first tournament of the season. HCU will play the opening 36-holes on Monday starting at 8:30 a.m. playing alongside UTEP and Creighton, starting on holes three through five. Live scoring is available via Birdiefire.com.
