WSOC: Huskies Net First Win of the Season Over Sam Houston

Emily Jaimes and Olivia Rossman score while Chloe Bagshaw records seven saves

HOUSTON – HCU got a pair of goals less than seven minutes apart in the first half and held off Sam Houston the rest of the way en route to a 2-1 victory on Thursday evening at Sorrels Field.

The Huskies (1-2) saw a strong effort in goal from Chloe Bagshaw who made three saves in the games first 21 minutes with three more Bearkats (1-3) attempts missing off target. HCU, meanwhile, saw a pair of attempts go wide early on. The Huskies worked the ball deep into the Sam Houston corner in the 22nd minute when sophomore Alexa Huerta crossed a beautiful ball into the box and Emily Jaimes blasted her first goal of the season into the net for a 1-0 HCU lead.

Less than seven minutes later, an HCU free kick bounced loose inside the 18-yard box and freshman Olivia Rossman lofted her first collegiate goal over the keeper to put the Huskies ahead, 2-0. Later in the first half, with less than five minutes left on the clock, the Bearkats' Solae Young snuck past Bagshaw but saw her shot cleared out by an HCU defender just before crossing the goal line.

The Bearkats tested the HCU defense in the second half with 16 total shots and five on goal. Bagshaw held strong but Sam Houston got on the board in the 88nd minute after Tiana Johnson had a point-blank shot stopped by the HCU keeper with a rebound attempt by Ariana Carrington stopped by an HCU defender but the following rebound fell back to the feet of Johnson who sent it into the back of the net to make it a one-goal game.

Jaimes's goal was her first of the season and fourth of her career while Rossman picked up her first goal in her third collegiate game. Huerta, meanwhile, now leads the team with three points on the season, adding her assist to a goal in the Huskies' last game.

HCU is right back at it at Sorrels Field this Sunday, Sep. 3, for a matchup with Texas State at 7:00 p.m.
