WSOC: HCU Drops Matchup to Utah Valley

Alexa Huerta scores her first goal of the season in the 5-1 defeat



WAIPAHU, Hawaii – HCU fell 5-1 to Utah Valley in the team's final match at the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff held at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Sunday.
 
Utah Valley (1-0-1), the preseason favorite in the WAC, came out on the offensive with a pair of shots on goal in the first six minutes but HCU (0-2) goalkeeper Chloe Bagshaw kept the game scoreless early. Bagshaw came up with another stop in the 17th minute but Hannah Lee put the Wolverines on the board with a 23rd-minute goal. The Huskies' Adi Radwanski had a shot saved in the27th minute quickly followed a minute later by a shot on goal off the foot of Xya Balderas but it was stopped by the UVU keeper. Mia Salas also had an attempt saved in the 36th minute and HCU trailed 1-0 at halftime.
 
The Wolverines' Faith Webber made it a 2-0 game just over four minutes into the second half and then pushed it to 3-0 a little more than 10 minutes later with a penalty kick. In the 58th minute, sophomore Alexa Huerta scored to the top left corner to put the Huskies on the board and net her first goal of the season. Olivia Rossman and Katie Marker also put attempts on goal in the second half while UVU added a pair of goals over the final 11 minutes of the game.
 
Huerta's goal was the third of her career after she finished her freshman campaign with two goals and one assist. As a team, the Huskies put six of eight shots on goal while UVU finished with nine of 13 attempts on target.
 
The Huskies return to the Lone Star State for a road matchup against the SMU Mustangs in Dallas, Texas on Thursday, Aug. 24 at 5:30 p.m. before playing their home opener on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 1:00 p.m. vs. UT Rio Grande Valley.
