HCU Announces Annual Award Winners

Elise Parel and Brennan Young named Athletes of the Year



HOUSTON – HCU announced its 2022-23 athletic award winners on Wednesday by the University at the end of year convocation.
 
Jan Edds Female Athlete of the Year
Elise Parel – Women's Golf
Parel was a first team All-Southland Conference selection for the third-consecutive year after leading the HCU women's golf team with a 72.73 scoring average. She earned four individual titles this season, including a stretch during the Spring with three-straight tournament wins at the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic, the UTRGV Invitational and the HCU Husky Invitational. In 10 total tournaments this year, Parel placed in the top-10 eight times and finished the year with five-straight top-five finishes.
 
Robbie Robertson Male Athlete of the Year
Brennan Young – Football
Young closed out a tremendous career on the football field second in program history with 415 tackles after a senior year in 2022 that saw him rack up 94 tackles, 9.5 tackles for a loss, one sack and six quarterback hurries. He ranked fourth in the Southland Conference in tackles and was named a finalist for the Doris Robinson Award. Young was also named to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society and was a three-time academic all-conference honoree.
 
Galdino Lucero Service Award
Clay Porter – Senior Director, Media Technology
An employee since 1985, Porter has been an avid supporter of HCU athletics and has selflessly given his time and efforts to support the athletic department, and University at-large, with multimedia support for decades.
 
Frances Curtis/Mildred Boone Spirit Award
Debora Burnett – Senior Financial Aid Advisor/Athletic Diversity Liaison
For more than 30 years, Debora Burnett has been a smiling face on the HCU campus while working in the financial aid office and often assisting HCU student-athletes with financial aid needs and questions. Additionally, she has been a mainstay at sporting events on campus cheering on the Huskies while also serving as the athletic department's Athletic Diversity Liaison.
 
Varsity Athletic Academic Award
Kylann Griffith
A sophomore on the beach volleyball team, Kylann Griffith finished the 2023 season with an 8-10 record on the court that included a five-match win streak with partner Mary Alper.
 
Jasie Roberts
A junior catcher, Jasie Roberts has started  all but one game this season and is currently third on the team with 20 RBI and fourth with 20 runs scored while her nine doubles are second-most on the team.
 
Michael Townsend
A senior from Montgomery, Texas, Michael Townsend closed out his senior season playing six rounds across a pair of tournaments with a stroke average of 77.67.
 
Chi Alpha Sigma
The newest members of Chi Alpha Sigma, the national honor society for collegiate student-athletes, were also announced. Chi Alpha Sigma is comprised of student-athletes who have received a varsity letter in their sport, achieved junior academic standing or higher after their fifth full-time semester and have earned a 3.4 GPA or higher.
