THIBODAUX, La - The Huskies fall to Nicholls in game two of the three-game Southland Conference series, 13-5, at Ray E. Didier Field.
HCU (8-26, 5-6 SLC) were led by junior third baseman
Reed Chumley who went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Freshman centerfielder
Trent Baker went 1-for-4 with a home run while senior leftfielder
Connor Fremin went 2-for-4 with two runs. Senior catcher
Parker Edwards went 1-for-4 with a home run.
Graduate student righthander
Walker Zander (1-3) took the loss, pitching four innings to start the game allowing seven earned runs on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout. Freshman righthander
Jonathan Valdez pitched a shutout inning of relief with a hit and a strikeout.
Nicholls (21-16, 7-4 SLC) were led by Garrett Felix who went 4-for-5 with five RBIs while Xane Washington went 3-for-3 with a home run, four runs, three RBIs, and two walks. Gerardo Villareal went 1-for-4 with a double, three runs, an RBI, and a walk.
Michael Quevedo (3-0) earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings to start the game giving up four earned runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Harper Jordan notched the save, pitching 3.2 innings of relief allowing an earned run on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
The Huskies got on the board early scoring a run in the top of the first inning when
Reed Chumley singled through the left side scoring
Connor Fremin. HCU added two more runs in the top of the third inning when Chumley singled through the left side scoring Fremin and
Austin Roccaforte. The Huskies tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning when
Parker Edwards hit a solo home run to left field. HCU's final run came in the top of the ninth inning when
Trent Baker homered to left field.
The Colonels tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the first inning when Xane Washington singled to right field scoring Parker Coddou. Nicholls took the, 5-3, lead in the bottom of the third inning starting with a Washington single through the left side scoring Wes Toups before Gerardo Villareal doubled to right field driving in Washington. The Colonels last two runs of the third inning came on a Garrett Felix single to second base scoring Villareal and Jayden Kay. Nicholls added four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning starting with Washington scoring on an RBI walk by Austin Cain before Felix singled to right field scoring Villareal and Kay. Cain scored on a pop up to second base off the bat of Jaden Collura to round out the inning. The Colonels tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning starting with Washington scoring on a fielding error by HCU's
Austin Roccaforte before Felix singled through the left side scoring Villareal. Cain scored on a fielding error by HCU's
Dylan LaRue. The Colonels last run came in the bottom of the seventh inning when Washington homered to right center.
The three-game Southland Conference series against Nicholls will conclude on Sunday, April 23
rd at 1:00 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field. Senior righthander
Will Ripoll (0-2) is probable to start for the Huskies while righthander Jacob Mayers (4-1) is probable to start for the Colonels.
