BSB: Huskies Claim Series-Opening Win Over Northwestern State, 14-13

HCU's upper-classman lead the way against the Demons

HOUSTON, Texas – The Huskies claim game one of the three-game series against Northwestern State series at Husky Field on Friday, April 14th, 14-13.

HCU (7-22, 4-3 SLC) were led by Junior third baseman Reed Chumley who went 4-for-5, falling a single short of hitting for the cycle with, a home run, a double, four runs, and four RBIs. Senior shortstop Austin Roccaforte also went 4-for-5 with four runs and a stolen base while senior catcher Parker Edwards went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. Senior pinch-hitter Logan Letney went 1-for-1 driving in the winning runs for the Huskies with a two RBI, double.

Senior righthander Javan Smitherman (1-1), earned the win, pitching a shutout inning of relief allowing two hits. Senior righthander Morris Austin, notched his first save of the season, pitching a shutout ninth inning of relief with one hit, one walk, and two strikeouts. Freshman righthander Baylor Baumann started the game pitching four innings while giving up four runs, three earned runs, on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Northwestern State (18-14, 4-3 SLC) were led by Bo Willis going 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, three runs, and two RBIs. Michael Dattalo also went 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run while Jake Haze went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs, and an RBI.

Kyle Froehlich (3-1), took the loss, pitching one inning of relief allowing one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts. Cal Carver started the game for the Demons, pitching four innings, giving up six runs, three earned runs, on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

The Huskies got off to a hot start in the bottom of the first inning when Reed Chumley homered to left center scoring Damian Ruiz and Trent Baker. HCU added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning when Ruiz and Baker scored on a fielding error by the Demon's Gray Rowlett on a hard ground ball off the bat of Samuel Benjamin. The Huskies added another run in the bottom of the third inning when Cash Benavidez singled up the middle scoring Austin Roccaforte. HCU added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning starting with a groundout by Dylan LaRue scoring Chumley before Parker Edwards singled up the middle scoring Roccaforte. The Huskies tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Chumley singled down the left field line scoring Benjamin, and Dylan LaRue doubled to right center scoring Roccaforte and Chumley. HCU retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning starting with an Edwards single to left field scoring Chumley before Logan Letney hit a double to left center bringing in Edwards and Roccaforte.

The Demons scored their first two runs in the top of the second inning with back-to-back home runs from Jake Haze and Bo Willis. Northwestern State added a run in the top of the fourth inning when Jacob Farrell singled through the left side scoring Haze. The Demons added another run in the fifth inning when Daunte Stuart scored on a throwing error by HCU's Cash Benavidez. Northwestern State tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth inning starting with Willis scoring on a single to right center off the bat of Jeffrey Elkins before Michael Dattalo hit a sac fly to center field driving in Elkins. The Demons put up seven runs in the top of the seventh inning starting with Gray Rowlett scoring off a Willis double to left center. Farrell, Willis, and Broch Holmes scored on a fielding and throwing error by HCU's Damian Ruiz before Elkins scored on a sac fly off the bat of Gabe Colaianni. The final two runs of the top of the seventh inning came on a home run to left center by Stuart scoring Dattalo.

The three-game series against Northwestern State at Husky Field will continue on Saturday, April 15th at 1 p.m. with graduate student righthander Walker Zander expected to get the start.
