HOUSTON – With a spot in the 2023 Southland Conference Tournament locked up, the HCU men's basketball team closes out the regular season with Senior Night against Southeastern at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening with tournament seeding on the line.
Depending on the outcome of Wednesday's games around the league, the Huskies (10-20, 7-10 SLC) will finish the regular season either tied for sixth place, alone in seventh place or tied for seventh with the sixth through eighth seeds in the tournament all still possible.
Last Saturday, HCU fell just short on the road against Nicholls, dropping a tightly contested 68-64 decision. Senior
Maks Klanjscek led all players with 25 points, giving him seven-straight games scoring over 20 points.
Brycen Long went 4-of-8 from three-point range in the loss, raising his season made threes total to 91 to tie him for the program's single-season record. With HCU guaranteed at least two more games this season, the junior needs just one more made three-pointer to break the record.
The Huskies continue to be among the best in the nation at getting to the foul line, ranking 18
th nationally with 22.7 free throw attempts per game. Long, Klanjscek and
Andrew King have all eclipsed 100 free throw attempts for the season.
Southeastern (17-13, 11-6 SLC) has rebounded after a four-game losing skid to win its last three games. The Lions won at Texas A&M-Commerce and at Lamar before picking up a home overtime win, 78-75, on Saturday against McNeese. Senior guard Boogie Anderson leads SLU with 14.1 points per game while sophomore Roger McFarlane is scoring 12.2 ppg and leads the team with 8.1 rebounds per game.
The Huskies and Lions met in Hammond, La. way back on Jan. 5 in what was a 71-59 Southeastern win. HCU got off to a sluggish start, not recording a point until more than four minutes into the game. Freshman
Pierce Bazil led the Huskies with 12 points while SLU's Anderson scored a game-high 22 points.
Prior to the start of Wednesday's game, HCU will honor four seniors.
Maks Klanjscek,
Sam Hofman,
Jason Thompson and the late
Darius Lee will all be recognized in the pre-game ceremony.
The Huskies will open the 2023 Jersey Mike's Southland Conference Basketball Championships presented by Louisiana Travel on Sunday, Mar. 5, at either 5:00 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. in Lake Charles, La. at The Legacy Center on the campus of McNeese State University.
