EDINBURG, TX – UTRGV takes game two of the series despite HCU's late rally on Saturday evening. The Vaqueros claimed a 10-6 victory over the Huskies at UTRGV Baseball Field.
Senior leftfielder
Logan Letney went 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI for the Huskies (0-2). Redshirt junior third baseman
Reed Chumley went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI's while senior shortstop
Austin Roccaforte also went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Freshman rightfielder
Damian Ruiz went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
Senior righthander
Walker Zander (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs, two earned, on four hits with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings for HCU. Freshman righthander
Nolan Wilson and senior righthander
Will Ripoll threw shutout innings in relief.
HCU scored two runs in the top of the fourth thanks to senior third baseman
Reed Chumley's two-RBI double off the right center wall allowing both
Tyler LaRue and
Dylan LaRue to score. Freshman second baseman
Cash Benavidez scored in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single to right center by Roccaforte. Letney followed up with an RBI single up the middle to score Roccaforte. Junior centerfielder
Samuel Benjamin hit a two-run homerun in the eighth scoring junior designated hitter
William Jewell.
Brandon Pimentel went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and scored a run, while Steven Lancia went 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base for the Vaqueros (2-0).
Angelo Cabral (1-0) earned the win in relief allowing two runs, two earned, on three hits while striking out two with a walk through 2.1 innings. Randy Garza allowed two runs, two earned, on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in four innings to start the game.
UTRGV scored three runs in the bottom of the first when Isaac Lopez, Montclair Cain, and Roberto Gonzalez scored on wild pitches. Cain added to the lead in the bottom of the third when scoring on a wild pitch. Lancia scored a run in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice. In the fifth inning, Cain scored on a passed ball before Pimentel doubled to left center scoring Gonzalez. Pimentel scored on a double to left center by Adrian Torres. Torres scored on a SAC bunt by Kade York to round out the fifth. UTRGV's last run came in the eighth inning via Zerek Sainz on a fielding error by HCU.
The series concludes with final game on Sunday with a 12 p.m. first pitch.
