HAMMOND, La. – HCU scored an equalizer in the second half after trailing at the break but dropped a 2-1 decision to host Southeastern in Southland Conference women's soccer action at Strawberry Stadium on Friday evening.
Alexia Murillo came close to putting HCU (4-9, 2-5 SLC) on the board in the 21
st minute with a shot off the crossbar. Neither team managed a shot on goal until the 45
th minute when SLU (5-9, 3-4 SLC) forward Hanna Moffatt found the goal to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 halftime lead.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, the Huskies drew a penalty inside the 18-yard box to set up
Alexa Huerta for the penalty kick. Huerta converted from the spot to pull the Huskies level but SLU had a response. Skye Kennedy put a shot on target in the 61
st minute, but
Chloe Bagshaw made the save, before Moffatt netted goal number two of the match less than seven minutes later.
Over the final 20+ minutes, HCU put multiple shots on target but the team's best scoring opportunity to find an equalizer came in the 85
th minute when
Katie Marker blasted a shot from close range and then had a rebound opportunity that also was stopped by keeper Olivia Griffin.
HCU finished the game with 16 shot attempts, five of which were on goal, while the Lady Lions put three of eight shot attempts on target. Bagshaw finished with one save in goal for HCU while Griffin totaled four stops for SLU.
The Huskies' road swing continues this coming Sunday, Oct. 15, in Thibodaux, La. against Nicholls at 1:00 p.m.
